POLL- Do you think Theresa May is the right person to lead the UK out of Europe?

Theresa May will on Wednesday become Britain’s prime minister promising to make a success of Brexit after she completed a dramatic rout of the rival Conservatives who led the campaign to take Britain out of the EU.

Mrs May, the 59-year-old home secretary, was part of the campaign to keep Britain in the EU, but now finds herself picking up the pieces after the last remaining pro-Brexit Tory leadership candidate threw in the towel.

Andrea Leadsom, the energy minister, announced at 12.15pm that she could not command the support of the party and abandoned a shortlived campaign that had been dogged by mis-steps and controversy.

Speaking outside the Houses of Parliament, in her first public comments since becoming PM-in-waiting, Mrs May said she was honoured and humbled.

Surrounded by what will now be her MPs, she pointed to the need for strong leadership in what would be “difficult times”. Faced with uniting her party after a bitter referendum, she said: “Brexit means Brexit and we are going to make a success of it.”

I still believe we should not be leaving the European union, there should be a general election as we now have a new government that has not been elected by the people, and making decisions that will effect people who were denied the vote.

Yes at last we the people have spoken and acted unlike our elected representatives who said yes for the last 40 years and did nothing!
Thanks David we are now free yes free we voted for our Government not Brussels and hey we will be how many millions a week better off and think of the savings on our welfare/ benefits budget what was it 7 Billion last year and rising. No we are in control again thanks David and the other 17 million plus voices/ voters. Well done we are free to stand and fall on the decisions that we make not Brussels and soon there will be other country's leaving someone has to be first well done everyone remember it will not happen overnight but we are in CONTROL and we are English remember the Falklands and all the other conflicts we will prevail and emerge stronger and better because as again we are British

It is my hope on 9th September when talks take place in Westminster due to many that signed the petition it will result in another vote to stay in EU as the vote for out was due to lies from Nigel and boris both idiots I think we should remain in the EU no questions asked

I'm not totally sure as yet but am willing (not that I have a choice) to give her a chance. Her speech on accepting the job of Prime Minister was full of promise for the future, let's see if she can fulfil those promises. I voted to Leave & all this talk of second referendums is by people who have no regard for democracy. All this rubbish about one side or the other telling lies takes place in every election but we don't continually rerun those. We've voted out, get used to it, accept it & instead of complaining get behind your country.

I voted remain but get over it. The gap was well over a million people who democratically voted to leave.

But I believe Cameron didn't do a bad job and I think Teresa being a tough woman will help with the ongoing negotiations not only with Europe but Scotland as well.

There is no need for a new General Election. The General Election was only last year when we voted for this government. We vote for a government not a person, we were not voting for a head of state. The Queens Speech put before parliament after that election included the fact that there would be a referendum before the end of 2017, that has taken place & the result is in, we Leave the EU. Stop fighting the democratic will of the majority. No new General Election & no 2nd Referendum, this is it.

The question was, and the ONLY question was:-

"DO YOU THINK TERESA MAY IS THE RIGHT PERSON TO LEAD THE UK OUT OF EUROPE?"

If you want to discuss second referendums then start your own blogg and leave this one alone.

As for my answer, Yes! She's made a good start. I don't like Boris Johnson because he's been a hatchet man whilst Mayor, but as Foreign Secretary, we need someone like him to force decent deals for us.

Theresa May was a Euro sceptic although she sided with Cameron through loyalty. I do think she will be the right person to take us out of Europe.She is a tough negotiator ,just the leader we need.Personally I think the EU as it is now will crumble in the next few years.

I think she will make a good PM but am undecided if she is the best person to lead us out of the EU; I am suspicious of her & fear a political stitch up! Watching with interest as she forms her new cabinet which is giving me a little more confidence that we may actually get what we voted for - to leave!

I agree with other sentiments on here; this poll is not about a second referendum & the looser's need to stop making any excuse to argue for one because the democratic vote wen't against them. The referendum is over & the UK voted overwhelmingly to abandon the lost cause EU "ship" which may well sink before we finalise negotiations on Brexit anyway.

May has been clever in appointing the Brexit pals to deal with the aftermath of the referendum. If she had appointed anyone else she would have been accused of deliberately trying to 'stitch up' any solution that might prove negative to the UK. If however the Brexits do not get a good deal, they will have failed to bring home the goodies they promised us were there for the demanding! She's on a winner any result. CLEVER !!

I think she will bring a more balanced approach not only in negotiating the exit but also in the governments approach to outstanding issues swept under the table by Cameron et al.
Although there is no definitive definition of democracy , the UK operates in what is known as Westminster Democracy and I would suggest the people who are calling for a new referendum and or government read this.

I think Theresa May is a shrewd lady appointing Boris Johnson as foreign secretary, David Davis and Brexit Minister and Liam Fox Internationa Trade Secretary. They got us into this mess by lying to the British Public and it will be their heads on the block and not hers when we are all suffering the consequences.

A general election CANNOT fulfil any useful function
in this. The June referendum gave the government
a mandate to negotiate a Brexit.

However there was no clarity on the terms under
which such an exit should occur. Thus we need a

I have no idea whether Mrs. May will prove the best person and no one can really have any idea how anyone, let alone a politician, will behave once they are in power as opposed to manoeuvring for it.

However I would like to take the opportunity to put forward a longer term possible consequence of Brexit which, although maybe somewhat alarmist and extreme is never-the-less a distinct, if highly unlikely, possibility.
During the campaign, no one seemed to be really looking at such serious effects and concerned themselves solely with rather vague concepts of freedom and sovereignty and of controlling immigration. Although maybe rather unlikely these longer term consequences are definitely possible.

Almost definitely Scotland will opt to become independent. This will leave the UK not only without the greater part of its oil and gas but also with a permanent, effectively unopposed conservative parliamentary majority. With no real opposition they will be free to dismantle the welfare state and sell off cheaply all Britain's assets to the instructions of their Wall Street masters.

This could trigger a reaction whereby Northern Ireland and Wales follow Scotland's example and even London could start pushing for it to become an independent city state (so forcing the UK parliament to move to somewhere like Oxford). The Northwest would in time probably also start pushing for them to become an independent Islamic state.
Hence we could eventually see the complete breakup of the entire union leaving a group of small inconsequential states in its stead somewhat similar to what existed here before the Roman conquest.

Christ you've got it completely wrong; who the hell are you & what nationality? -- come on own up! Pay our fair share; the UK is a net contributor to the EU & always has been as far as I'm aware. So, we've been paying our "fair share" since we joined the "Common Market" in the 70's & have since supported our European brethren for the good & common cause. The referendum (for those who bothered to vote) is not about supporting our EU brethren, it's about being dictated to by faceless Brussels autocrats whose only aim is a "United States of Europe" (not for me) which will also help keep their nose in the "high life" trough they feed in. They are treating ALL European citizens as cash cow mugs, there is a limit &, for those that take an interest, it has FINALLY been reached in the UK! So silly, not at all; most in the UK that voted OUT still care but are just trying to regain control of our own destiny.

A referendum is the ONLY fully democratic expression of the nation's will. General elections, which in the most recent one, gave
one party (the Conservatives) 330 Members of Parliament by obtaining 50% of the votes, yet another party (UKIP) got only ONE yet had 13% of the vote!! The next referendum has to be about changing this astonishingly undemocratic voting system, not arguing the toss about accepting or not the EU referendum result!

We are OUT and OUT is what we must stay! Do I trust May? No, not really, but who else is there that we can vote for? Brexit has worked and we are free! Thank God! Now watch the EU fall apart as more countries return to being sovereign states.

As far as I understand it once Article 50 is invoked it is irreversible and we leave the EU two years later whether negotiations are complete or not so I don't understand why anyone thinks a second referendum could be held once the terms of our leaving are known. If we wanted to what would be effectively rejoining at this point I'm sure the EU would place many unacceptable terms on our membership far less favourable than we have now and the adopting of the dreaded euro. I think the UK will be just fine outside of the undemocratic EU, how can any organization with the likes Juncker in a powerful position be good?

She is another merkel by the looks of it, and more of a Dismay than May.
