Oi! Oi! Oi!
Just as Americans celebrate their independence on July 4, Australians on January 26, proudly celebrate Australia Day, by grabbing a coldie (beer), throwing a steak (or shrimp) on the barbie, blowing up the pool, and enjoying a game of cricket, covered in the green and gold zinc.
Australia, you may have heard of it, is a little island at the bottom of the 'mapped' world, filled with 21 million incredibly laid-back Aussies, warm weather, pristine beaches, Vegemite, and an array of animals that make the Top 10 world's deadliest list.
Australia Day marks the date that the first British Colony (convicts) settled on Australian soil, led by English Lieutenant James Cook, back in 1788.
However, Australia was inhabited by the Aboriginal people well before the Europeans arrived, a controversial topic, one I'll save for another time.
Usually, I'm in here in America on Australia Day and find myself wallowing pathetically, by baking Lamingtons, eating Vegemite by the spoonful and, watching every Australia movie I own (think Muriel's Wedding).
However, this year I was home, so after a great morning at the traditional Australia Day event in the park, patting snakes, riding ponies, eating chewy steak burgers and sweating in 100 degree heat, it was time to cool off in the blow up backyard pool with friends, and a 12-pack...is there any other way?
So, that's my Australia Day wrap-up. Now I want to know what being Australian, American, European, Asian, or wherever it is that you call home...means to you?
