Hello all. Carol and I are applying for our N.I.E. numbers' next week  and have read that some clients' are charged various amounts' for this service. Alternatively I have also read that this service is free. Does anyone have information on this in authorative form so that if we are asked to pay a fee we can show the parties' involved that this is in fact a free service? Look forward to the visit and chatting to residents' and anyone visiting at the same time. Bye and best wishes'. Carol and Michael.

Hi Michael, My wife and I got our NIE numbers by applying to the Spanish consulate in Manchester. The whole process took 6 weeks and I think it was £15 per person. This process is ideal as long as you are not in a rush. Atlas, our agents, did not know it was possible to obtain your NIE in this way. We are buying No 21 on phase 2 and will complete on the 11th of October.

Regards, Greg and Jean.

HI All,   Not only did Atlas not know that you can apply for the NIE number through the Spanish Embassy in either Manchester, or London, but our Lawyer didn't know either.     It cost Mick and I £22. each through the embassy in London for authenticating our application and sending it to Madrid.     I believe that the acual NIE number is issued free, but the charges made are for taking you and acting as translator, etc.

Regards

Carol Faith

All it's probaly nearer to the truth that the selling agencies do know that you can obtain the NIE certificae from the Consulate in London or Manchester but make so much money from the mid term visits of their clients that they are reluctant to give the information. Atlas charge over 100 euros for a mid term service to visit your property and get the NIE.

Regards,  Greg.

Hi All,

We got our NIE from Cabo Roig ourselves. When we went to our solicitors (Aroca), they filled in the paperwork, gave us all the necessary copies that we took to the NIE Office. We got there early, but were cleared within 5mins of opening (8.30am)and it cost us nothing. Atlas and co are having a bit of a laugh charging what they do especially when the service is free, all you are paying for is them to help fill in paperwork, (which your legal people will do anyway if you ask) and the cost of petrol to take you there.

Hi there Michael and Carole, we did the  NIE number thing with Iberian in June, at the time they did not attempt to charge us, but we are ready for them to try! they did keep hold on the paperwork though, they said for safe keeping, on hind sight we should have said that we wanted it. We will refuse to pay because we were not informed before or at the time that there was a cost implication, we have spoken to people who are already living there and have have refused to pay, the nie numbers are actually free, so any cost they are putting on on top is for them, again.

have a good visit, i am sure you will, we did,

stan and diane

Hello all,

We went to Manchester today and sorted out our NIE. I was a little dubious about what would happen, but I have to say it was  very easy. The man behind the counter was very helpful. He obviously realised he had a couple of numptys on the other side of the screen. We produced our completed forms, he looked at them and produced an idiots guide to the bits we had missed. We filled it out as per the guide, handed it back, he checked it and then gave me a piece of good news...UK Nationality..22 pounds....my Nationality, Rep. of Ireland 8.95.

In all we needed.. 1 copy each of our passports. 2 passport photographs. 1 original and 1 copy of our NIE forms, the copies were stamped and returned to us as proof of sending. The cash..and a look at the original passports.  We offered the contract of sale for him to look at, but he did not want to see it.  That was it.

On the NIE if you dont have an address in Spain leave the address part of section 1 blank.  In the address part of section 4 put your present home address and the NIE will be sent to that address.

In section 2, tick Social and write in the box  "Compra de una viviendo en Espana."       (purchase of a house in Spain)

The whole process took 10 minutes, we will let you know when we recieve the NIE.

All the best Kevin and Wendy  H
