ripped us off - arrived at Alicante very late at night so just had to get on with it - once bitten and all that - cheep as chips hire pay for the fuel on a Kia picanto - 89 Euros plus IVA told to bring back empty ouch....

on empty we put 20 euros in which took us three quaters full.

how can you be charged IVA on the fuel surely thats not leagal

anyway sure you will make your own mind up if you choose Europe car for your hire car this coming year

I had the same problem with Victoria car hire Alicante airport, I also had to get a bus to their compound which I wasn't expecting then had to pay €1000 euros deposit to them as I didn't want their exspensive insurance which wasn't returned until after I got home. I complained about the fuel charge so they agreed to allow me to return with half a tank. As I picked up in the dark and the address wasn't on any paperwork I called them for their address/postcode to return the car which they didn't know which caused me even more stress!

Centauro also added a fuel charge which they ageed to waiver if returned full but again the charge wasn't returned to me until I got home as they had debited it from my card along with the rental charge.

IVA (now 21%) is indeed applied to fuel which is one reason why prices have gone up recently. If you get a receipt from the Petrol Station you will see it itemised.

There's not many cars with under a 9 gallon tank (i.e. 40 litres) although I see the Kia Picanto has a 7.7 gallon (35 litre) tank which at say 1.5 euros per litre is 52 euros to fill it. Sounds like your fuel guage was faulty as at best 20 euros would only be 40% full.

On another point the increase in IVA to 21% just means more Spanish businesses will want to sell for cash and avoid charging IVA.
