Hi, My wife and I have done ours on our last visit. We went along to the notary with our passports and i think 2euros each. They copied the passports and said our nie numbers would be issued to our solicitors. Our agent arranged it all for us. Thanks, kris

The law regarding obtaining NIE numbers changed recently, you have now to apply in person at a police station that has the facilities to process the application. I believe that Almeria is our closest location, however you can also take the completed forms to the consulate in the UK and for £22 they will certify your passport copies etc and send to Spain for processing, I read on a forum that this is not as quick as doing it in Spain.
Ray.

We visited late January. Our agent took us into Vera; there are 2 notary offices. We took passports and our purchase contract. They took photocopies of the passports and 2 Euro each from us. Our Solicitor e-mailed us scanned copies of the NIE certificates and said they hold on to the originals as they are needed on completion day. It is true that the local police station does get involved but, in our case, we assume the Notary forwarded the details to the police and then on to our solicitor when they had been approved/registered. Hope this is of help.

Hi All
We visited the Spanish consulate in London this morning to apply for our NIE numbers; it is located just off of the Kings road along from Sloan square. We arrived at about 11:00 this morning, the staff were very friendly and helpful, we only waited 5 mins to be seen and a further 5 mins or so to complete the process. To top that, the £22 charge is no longer required and copies of the documents were presented to us their. We treated ourselves to a £2:50 cup of coffee and equally expensive scone at Peter Jones store, and then headed home. “Painless & free”. The NIE's numbers have to be sent to an address in Spain, ( Estate agents or Solicitors etc).
