Somebody recently mentioned they had applied for their NIE number. Can anyone advise on where to go to do this and what supporting information/documents you need to bring. Also, any idea how lomg the process takes?

Thanks

Sean

Hi Sean,

Your solicitor should already have this in hand as it will be needed before you can complete the sale.

The process has recently changed and you now have to take the forms and supporting documents to Almeria in person. You will need the application form, photocopy of passport and proof of reason why you need an NIE (photocopy of purchase contract is ideal). Once you submit the forms they will enter the details on the computer and give you a receipt which will be needed when you pick up the NIE document (again in Almeria).

Hope this helps

Stu

Sean, I have sent you a private message with a copy of the downloaded application form etc and how to go about the process, it is better and cheaper to do it your self. You could also do a search in the forums search section and input NIE and you will be able to read theads on how to do it yourself saving around around 150euro,solicitors costs each.

Hi Sean,

Last month a colleague of mine  went to the Spanish Consulate in Manchester to get her NIE.  It cost her and her husband £21.00 each, they had to take their passports and the original contract (Patricia told us at CDP a copy would not be accepted).

We sent our Solicitor an email asking him if this is acceptable that was 2 weeks ago still waiting for a reply.

We will let you know as soon as we get a  reply.

Hi Pat & Frank, I doubt your solicitor will reply to you, at the end of the day he is not going to want you to arrange your rown NIE as he wil then not be able to charge you a fee for doing it hiself! If I were you I would make sure he hasn't already done it and if not then arrange your own it will be much cheaper. I have a help/fact sheet if you want it PM me and I will send it to you.

Actually the law has now changed and you cannot get your soliciter to get your NIE number. This has to be done in person at Almeria, or alternatively go to the Manchester or London consulate. But be warned, because of this change to the law (to clampdown on fraud) the consulates are overstretched and there are long delays

Paul's right - does take a while. I've been advised to allow three months from the date of application if done through the embassy or consulate. I have also been told it's free

We went to the Manchester consultate today and have not been charged for the application going through them.

They have suggested the time scale is about 3 months but we will wait to see!

We took some blank forms as suggested by another forum member and were glad we did as they asked for us to fill 2 forms in for each of us, one was then stamped and handed back to us for our records.  I asked if they could not photocopy them as this seemed easier but they said they were unable to do this.

The consultate was easy to locate and there was no queue.

Can you tell me where to get the forms to fill in and do you need to take any documentation with you?

Thankyou

I thought I would let you all know we received our NIE number on Tuesday, that' s  very good considering we were told it could take anthing upto 3 months, (it's only taken about 4 weeks)  so we were quite impressed and even better it cost us nothing.

You will see that we applied through the Manchester consultate for our numbers early September, we received these through at our UK home address yesterday, so approximately 6 weeks.

Hope the above helps re assure fellow buyers it is easy to obtain whilst in the UK and free of charge.
