GIANT MARINA PLANNED FOR LA LÍNEA

La LineaThe Port of Algeciras Authority which covers the waters of La Línea has reported that a private company intends to build a 777-berth marina in the border town. The first phase should be completed in early 2009.

The project has been approved by the port authority who stated that Alcaidesa Servicios had been awarded a concession to build and run the marina. It will invest 21 million euros in the leisure port that will be located close to the frontier with Gibraltar. The port itself will cover 60,000 square metres of land and 90,000 square metres of water and include reclaimed land. The finished project will have a marina, green zones, sports facilities and a commercial – leisure complex.

The mayor of La Línea, Juan Carlos Juárez, has stated that 650 jobs will be directly created by the port and double that amount indirectly. "The economic spin-offs will mean a huge boost for La Línea. This will be one of the best marinas in Spain, given its privileged location beside an airport and a Palacios de Congresos."

Some more information about the planned Marina (this time taken from the local paper "The Resident"). The amount of detail makes it look as though this is definately going to happen. Although the location is on the other side of Gibraltar (in the Bay of Algeciras), it's still close to the Vista Hermosa development and will undoubtablly promote further growth in the area.

"Costain Group PLC said Alcaidesa Servicios, a Spanish development company in which it holds a 50 pct interest, has been granted consent to build a yacht marina and commercial centre at La Linea de la Concepcion, next to the border with Gibraltar.

The company has been granted a 30-year concession by the Port Authority of Algeciras for a 286,000 square metre area, in which Alcaidesa will develop an 800-berth marina and 14,000 square metre retail zone, as well as a 763-space car park and 20,000 square metre yacht repair facility. The marina is within the existing sea wall of the Bay of Algeciras, close to the town centre and only a few minutes walk from Gibraltar airport.

Andrew Wyllie, Chief Executive of Costain, commented “We are delighted to have been awarded the concession, which expands our property development activities in Spain as well as our presence in the Marine sector. The marina is ideally located to meet the forecast growth in demand for yacht berths, boosted recently by the opening up of Gibraltar airport to flights from Spain and elsewhere in Europe. This is likely to increase even further once the new terminal and runway extension have been built.”

Construction is expected to start in early 2008, Costain said."

Looks like there are further developments for the Marina in La Linea.

The artist's impression looks good:

The Alcaidesa Group have signed a 20 million euro deal with Spanish civil engineering giant Ferrovial for the construction of the new sports marina to be built on La Linea de la Concepcion's western shoreline.

The project will cover a site of more than 31 hectares consisting of a land area of 16.5 hectares and water surface area of almost 16 hectares providing berths for 800 vessels.

The new marina will occupy the site opposite the Iberostar Hotel and the Palacio de Congresos and just a few minutes from the international airport of Gibraltar, and will be divided into three distinct areas: the central zone will be dedicated to water sports and pastimes; the norther section will be the marina area; and the western section will be allocated for commercial and passenger vessels.

Work is expected to get underway very soon, with a timeframe of 18 months predicted for completion.
The marina will also boast a commercial centre with recreation and leisure facilities also a feature of the development.
