Can anyone advise on the procedure for obtaining an NIE number?

I thought my solicitor could obtain for us, but am told that in Murcia you have to apply in person.

Is this correct?

If so, how do you go about doing this?

We did it all at Cartegena police station.

If you have given your solicitor power of attorney then he can apply on your behalf.

You can also apply at the Spanish consulate in London. This service is free but you must allow several months for this to come through.

We applied for NIE no at the Spanish Consulate in Manchester.  They were very helpful, everything went smoothly and NIE no arrived about 6 weeks later in the post.  As far as I am aware you can do this at any Spanish Consulate so might be worth checking out the nearest one to you.  The fee was minimal - I think about 20 pounds each.

we went to murcia with our medsea rep and it only took 10 mins.

he then went back a few days later to collect it.

it was painless compared to alicante, where you can get it on the day, but you have to queue from around 3am to be sure of getting it!

Just a quick update for anyone still interested. We went to Cartegena Police Station to get our NIE numbers.

We took a photocopy of our agreement with Roda, a copy of our passports and 2 Passport photo's each.

On arrival at around 10:30 there was a queue, but on the advice of Florina from Roda, we made it known that we there for NIE numbers. We were shown straight to the front and the whole process took less than 10 minutes. The numbers will be ready to collect in 20 days time.

We made contact with a guy who collected us at hotel 525 drove us to Alicante, filled in the application, walked us through the process and collected the NIE for us 24 hours later.

Long day from 5.30 am but fantastic service for euro75

If you are against waiting, you could ask  your solicitor

If they have power of attorney then they can do this for you.

My guy charged 150 euros and it came through in 10days.

 I certainly would not want to waste a days holiday at the police station

I am not 100% sure, but I don't think the POA covers this any longer and lawyers cannot get the NIE on client's behalf.  Will check it out to see if I am right or wrong but I am sure someone else will be able to confirm whether or not this is correct information.
