We are having a number of debates within our community regarding the value for money we are getting from the gardener we employ.

He is paid 16,000 euro's per annum for for 20 hours work a week......if and when he turns up?

a lot of us consider that we should be able to employ a full time gardener, with some knowledge of what needs to be done, and the ability to put his back into it to show the results of his efforts for this sort of money.

At the moment our gardens are a disgrace, the grass has gone brown, every flowerbed is overgrown with weeds and nothing is getting done to improve the situation.

the gardeners contract is up for renewal in december and i would be interested to know what other communities are paying, to see if we are getting value for money and if anyone has a recommendation for a reliable and hardworking gardner or company for the calahonda area on the costa del sol.

thanks

Sorry not able to recommend a gardener for Calahonda but the going rate is 8 to 12 Euros an hour on the CDS - it is largely considered unskilled labour but if they think you will pay it they will charge what they think they can get away with. If he isnt doing the job he isnt even worth 1 euro an hour. The average wage in Andalucia is about 8,700 a year so at 16k he is not doing badly for a 20 hour week even though living on the CDS is more expensive. Are you sure you are not paying him and he is sub contracting to someone else - often happens. You might have a Bulgarian that he is paying 5k a year to and he is pocketing the rest for doing nothing - wouldnt be the first time.

16,000 Euros for 20 hours work....ouch!  That's one expensive gardener.  We pay just over 7,000 for the same amount of time...but he does an excellent job.

I think Smiley is right.  You are probably paying someone who is then contracting cheap labout to do the actual job.  We had this ourselves until I took over as president and sacked them!

Your administrator needs to be more on the ball.  I'm sure they could find you a much more reasonable and better gardener.

Would be interested to know the size of garden areas (m2) that you all basing these costs on. Our new developement will have about 30,000 m2 of garden area, and 2 or 3 pools. We are also in the Costa Del Sol area. Can anyone recommend anyone in the Fuengirola/Benalmadena areas. Look forward to your replies.

I dont think we have anymore than 6000 or 7000 M2 of gardens for our complex and that includes the 1 pool area. With 30,000M2 you will be looking at a team of about 4 or 5 gardeners....finding 1 good one is a tough job....best of luck with 4!!
