Hi there
I am Kate, had a failed attempt at moving to Spain's Costa Del Sol 3 years ago, now looking into things again along with my two children. Look forward to chatting more, if anyone has any info on social care jobs in Spain I would be so grateful. Bye for now.

Hi Kate, well I'm friendly & chatty, will I do ? Great people on here, generally, always the odd one as in all forums.
Sorry your last attempt failed, better luck this time. We're non resident on the CB so have no knowledge of the CDS, just popped in to welcome you.

Hi everybody and thanks for the warm welcome, much appreciated. Have seen one or two sites where the natives weren't so helpful. The failed attempt to CDS was due to family breakdown more than anything. My kids are now nagging me to try again (with them). I'm only just at the point of making tentative enquiries but I do love Spain and find myself missing the lifestyle (not to mention the weather!) immensely.
As I said in first message, any help with social care jobs would be gratefully received.

Hi Kate,
We've been living on the CDS since Nov 06. A lot of the CDS papers have ads for Care agencies of various kinds. There are also a couple of Care Homes for elderly expats in the Benalmadena area. A couple of our neighbours when we were living in Nerja prior to moving to Benalmadena were wheelchair bound and had Home Care assistants coming in daily from an agency. There is also the Cudeca Hospice in Benalmadena.
Hope this helps.

HI Katie,
I'm a newbie to the forum too, moving to the Costa Blanca next May. I'm not sure what kind of job you do in Social care - I work in social care too, as a drugs worker and have NVQ4 in Advice and Guidance - but after researching this, it seems that unless you have a great understanding of the Spanish Language (which at present, I don't) there aren't that many jobs available in my usual occupation. So, I have decided to become a singer in Spain! (I am trained and have sang for years, it's not something I just thought I would have a go at!!)
Like the other post said, if you're talking about working with elderly ex-pats or something similar, there could be a call for it, or maybe you could look at holiday centres that specialise in offering breaks to people with disibilities? Because Social Care is such a wide and varied field of work, I suppose it would depend on what your area of expertise is - as mine is drug work, there is virtually no call for an English Speaking drugs worker as most of the drugs issues in Spain are not in the ex-pat areas.
I'm not sure if that helps at all, I hope it all works out for you this time

Thanks everybody, (Jenna I can hold a note but I don't think I'll follow you into a career in music! good for you tho)
I am about to start work as a social worker (unqualified) on the older persons team for my local council so will have more of the co-ordinator's role behind me. Maybe for now I need to focus on learning more Spanish?
The social care job I have been doing most of is support worker for adults with learning disabilities. I usually work on a one-to-one basis, the aim being to increase independence. I guess I would need to get myself in the social care "loop" over there and then other opportunities would present themselves.
I do check out surinenglish.com can anybody give me any other newspaper sites for CDS? Thanks again everyone for such a lot of info already. I will search for elderly care homes in Benalmadena. I do now the costa pretty well and also a little of Alhaurin El Grande so would be happy to help if I possibly can.

Hi Kate,
Try - Town Crier, Euro Weekly and Costa Del Sol News. You will also see an Ad for the ex pat group that meets in the Bonanza Bar in Benalmadena. They have a welfare rep who might be a source of info as the Royal British Legion may also be. You could also try the Consulate in Malaga as they have just started a Help Line for the over 50's. Support for elderly ex pats has recently become a real issue on the CDS. I used to work in Adult Education in the East Midlands and had a lot of contacts within the Social Service Teams supporting both older people and Adults with Learning Disabilities so I keep up an interest in those areas of work.
Good Luck
Jenny

Thankyou Jenny, I had forgotten about the Town Crier for one. I know the Bonanza Bar so maybe it gives me an extra excuse to pop-over! (Like anyone needs an excuse to visit southern Spain!)
My family have a property (have had for decades) near the Puerto Marina and when I came to the Costa to live before I rented a house near Tivoli so was beginning to find my way around. Are you enjoying life in Benalmadena? I watch the Spanish news at home and see you've had some bad weather. Still, at least it goes quickly when it visits the CDS!

Hi Kate,
I forgot the Friday Ad (or is it Advertiser?) The flash floods last Wednesday were in Fuengirola. We had 3 hours or so of rain here which was great as I was able to sit out in it and cool down! It was the first rain since the end of May.

Hi Jenny, thankyou will look that one up also. I don't think I've ever seen 3 hours of rain on the CDS, not even in January! I saw the pic on the front page of sur and couldn't believe it! I know what you mean though about it being refreshing but considering that I'm still in the UK; nothing changes here we're still sick of the stuff! lol

Hi Kate welcome to the forum. If you havent seen three hours of rain on the CDS clearly you havent been here in February or October - or even last April. Then again its better than the UKs average of three hours sun per annum.
As mentioned by Bantam I think that most of the social work you are likely to find will be for ex pat Brits - think there are quite a few residential care homes around - anything outside of that would require Spanish language skills and also likely a Spanish qualification or some kind of "bridge" qualification from UK to Spain (if that makes sense).

Thanks Patrick, Guess I know where to come for my mortgage now eh? Been to the CDS pretty much most months of the year but admittedly not seen a February there for a couple of years and guess the climate has become unpredicatable for all of us now. I almost got swept away in the floods a few weeks ago here in the UK in my little car.
Social Crawl, hi! Pleased to meet you, this forum seems to be a very pleasant one so far, it's nice to know so many supportive people are out there whatever step of the journey you're on. Are you in Spain?
