My Spanish speaking German neighbour, told me this morning that Spanish transport workers are going on stike from next Monday , and this could lead to shortages in the shops.
Has anyone else heard about this?

The death of Julio Cervilla Sojo, a 47 year old haulier from Albolote (Granada)whilst on picket duty is to be deeply regretted. Truck drivers here as in most of Europe are, for the most part, the gentlemen of the road. Their efforts are largely unrewarded, their work goes un-noticed most of the time and they are generally accepted as just part of the scenery. There comes a time however when go slows are no longer enough. Self employed or company drivers, the fact is that they are underpaid and under-rated, a valuable part of the community. Recent price hikes in the cost of diesel, the lifeblood of these troopers is driving many to the wall.
Perishable goods have all but gone from the major supermarkets like Carrefour, Mercadona and Alcampo. Panic buying doesnt seem to be as bad here as in the UK, but undeniably the strike is hitting home, very quickly.
Whilst I, like all customers regret that strike action has been taken, I fully understand the reasoning and back the drivers 100%.

I agree with you foxbat. I do support their action too.
Yesterday many petrol stations were without any fuel at all. Even in Gibraltar they had run out of petrol and diesel.
The supermarkets are starting to look quite bare.
It's amazing what an impact the truck drivers strike is having.
Panic buying HAS certainly hit our area here on the Costa del Sol quite badly.

good for you. They have to stand up for their jobs. I fear in the UK, we seem to accept whatevers thrown at us these days. Nobody wants strike action, but sometimes it's the only way when negotiation fails.

Justin,
Is the strike indefinite? We are going to CDS next Tuesday and we are seriously wondering if we should cancel. We don't want to turn up at the airport and have no fuel for the car and as we are self catering, not be able to get essentials such as bread , milk etc?

Tish, the strike is indefinite. I was just talking to Diego who is going to Almeria tomorrow to see his family. He was telling me that he's got enough fuel to get there but not sure if he'll be able to return!
No water or eggs or milk in Mercadona this morning. The local petrol station got some diesel last night but it won't last long.
I have to go to Marbella today and will be driving rather gingerly! Need to stretch out the tank of fuel I've got as don't know how long this strike will last.
Justin

Thanks Justin, just what I didn't want to hear! What would you advise? ( I just want an opinion other than my husbands!!!)
We will be self catering, but the apt we have booked, has no oven so we eat out all the time. We've stayed there at least once a year for the last 6 years and no cooking has never been an issue(it's a HOLIDAY!). I guess the restaurants will have no food either.

A friend of mine here in the UK told me this morning about the report on Sky News last night about the Truckers strike in Spain.
He was amazed at the fact that not only did I know about it, but the fact that I've known about it for almost a week now.
Just goes to show how informative this site really is!
And by the looks, things are really starting to get bad, when the Spanish Car Industry grinds to a halt, due to a lack of parts and fuel, as happend yesterday. That's the problem with operating a 'just in time' strategy with regards to stock parts.

When there is no water in the supermarket......things are dire! Surely the Spanish government will step in. It is the peak holiday time and so many people depend on the trade.

This except from Reuters:
"Spanish Infrastructure Minister Magdalena Alvarez told parliament the government and the main haulage association had agreed terms.
However, the two other groups, representing most of the strikers, were continuing to demand that the government set a minimum tariff for their services, which Alvarez said was impossible."
"Diesel has risen to around 1.30 euros ($2.01) a litre from 0.95 euros a year ago, pushing heavy fuel users such as truck and taxi drivers, fishermen and farmers across Europe to demand support from their governments."
In my opinion, such strikes make an already intolerable situation, impossible! I agree with what they are trying to achieve, however such actions create more anarchy on the streets, and makes the public LESS sympathetic with their cause.
Life is difficult as it is, but without food on your table, and without the means to acquire such, then the public demeanour will turn ugly.
We are still planning on coming out on the 28th June, unless of course Malaga Airport shuts, which they won't due to lack of fuel, as they are served via undergound pipes.

But you said there's no water!! That really bothers me. I'm not drinking the tap water unless it's boiled for tea!! As it's peeing down with rain as I type....maybe we'll still come along for the joyride!
Justin you wrote: Tish, in my opinion you should still take a holiday. Do you mean somewhere other than Spain?

Wahay!
Pills 'n booze!
Party time at Tish's place.
Na! Only kidding about pills, don't have any use for them, other than the headache type. Thought I'd best say so now, before I get a load of replies saying that I'm some kind of party animal and I promote pill poping, which I don't.

Thought I'd add my two pennarth though this is over till the next time.
We arrived in Murcia evening of June 9th & our car hire company said they'd had trouble filling the car which had a full tank. The garage they'd used said they only had around two hours of diesel left at that time.
Next day, Mercadona & Lidl's in Guardamar had virtually no fresh veg, fruit or fresh meats, fridges were closed down.
Thankfully, restaurants had ample so we ate out.
We were concerned as we'd arranged with two EOS couples that we'd drive down to stay two nights in Almeria but both kept us informed on the situation their end & we managed to go on June 16th, I think it was.
However, up till then we had to get water where we could as shops had sold out & we were drinking lots as it was so hot.
It certainly needs addressing with diesel being so expensive.
