Can I make a suggestion here...
Dont be in too much of a hurry to ditch AVG 7.5.
Yes. I know they say they are withdrawing support for this version in April , but this is exactly what they said a year ago when they brought in AVG 8.0
Those who took the hint then and downloaded AVG 8 downloaded a program that was so buggy that certain aspects of it effectively brought their internet to a standstill. The fact that AVG8 has gone from v8 to v8.5 in the space of less than a year suggests to me that it is still not entirely bug free.
These bugs are covered by a couple of entries on this forum. Justin might remember the problems since he too was affected...
By far the biggest problem was associated with email virus scanning and url virus scanning; these alone slowed access dramatically, because AVG 8 scans an email before allowing it to be opened and scans all of the content of a web site before displaying it. The email scanner can be turned off but url scanning cannot.
If you use Google, Yahoo or msn email you dont need the virus scanner anyway since all fo these have their own built in scanners and the two scanners running side by side raises problems of incompatibility.
There were compatibility issues between AVG 8 and Norton too...Again these incompatibilities brought our computers to a standstill. We have three computers and AVG 7.5 was installed on each. We have removed Norton from all of them, but please be advised that if you decide to go this route too and remove Norton using the Add/Remove Program facility in the Windows Control Panel certain Norton files get left behind that can screw up your computer and have to be 'surgically' removed using a different method.
If anyone wants information on this file removal operation I can dig up the information.
For myself, I hung onto AVG 7.5 and experienced none of the problems we had on our other desktop machine to which we downloaded AVG 8 (and promptly regretted).
I'm going to play wait and see...my AVG 7.5 still gets its daily update...if it stops on April 12 then I might just think about upgrading, but on reflection I might just go elsewhere; there are plenty of other free programs out there just as good if not better!
