Hi,
We have explored the Fuengirola down to Gibraltar part of the Costa Del Sol staying in Fuengirola and Puerto Duquesa and I am considering spending a week in the Alicante & Almeria area to have a good look around at the various areas and see what they are like with a view to potentially buying a holiday home there.
Any recommendations as to where would be a good base to allow us to drive to various areas to check them out would be appreciated.
I suppose we are looking for something to buy in an area that probably doesn't exist, nice village/small town on the coast with preferably a port or Marina, nice sandy beach and a few bars and chiringuitos. Not too commercialised and definitely not a Home from Home for the Brits, but with enough English so we can get by with our limited Spanish.
Thanks in advance
Kelju

HI
Have you tried Lo Pagan? It is on the Mar Menor but also close to the Med. About 40 mins from Alicante airport, or about 30 from Murcia San Javier airport. Still very spanish but with a slight touch of Brit. Many Spanish holiday there.

Cabo de Palos has it all. Or try the beautiful coastline (unspoilt) from Los Nietos, Estrelle de Mar, by far my favourite is Los Alcazares, San Pedro.- the list goes on. Just hire a car and see them all!
We chose a Spanish town 10 minutes inland and got more value for money buying.
Best wishes

what you are looking for will be very-very-very-veeeeryyyyyy hard to find - maybe impossible! what you would need is the telephone-box of dr. who........and go back in time about 15 years!
seriously:
on the coast you will not find anything completely unspoilt! these times are over. and if somebody calls altea "unspoilt".....well, yeah, it is less spoiled than benidorm.
the only area i can think of is south of mojacar...... aqua amarga and san jose are probably the least spoiled villages in Spain.
good luck!

You will probably find it more relaxing if you divide your time between Alicante area [ Costs Blanca South] and Almeria
Staying say around Orihuela Costa as the road system will give you easy access to everywhere
Then move on to Almeria between Aguilas and Mojacar staying perhaps around Vera
LIke all of us you seem to be looking for the 'ideal' but in both locations you will have lots of choice and compared with CDS you will find prices very competitive
Also living expenses with drink and food much cheaper...we often go to a tapas bar in Cuevas and get 4 freshly cooked tapas and 2 beers for 6.50 €
In Almeria have a look at San Juan de los Terreros and my wife and I have chosen a small hamlet just out side Huercal Overa [ 20 mins inland]
Here 2 bed villas in 250 m2 plots start from circa 140.000 €
In both locations there are ready now at 25/30% reduced asking prices and lots of good deals for re sales

Schumarc,
If you read the post ,port, marina, chiringuitos, nice beach, all of this is Altea plus a historic old town.
Altea is nothing like Benidorm, i would like to know what your comments are based on, have you been to Altea.

oooh yes, i have been there! i know the whole costa blanca, the costa azahar, the costa almeria.........you name it, i know it! and if you read MY post, i was clear that altea is less developed than benidorm! but compared to aqua amarga or san jose it is overdeveloped. thats all i was saying.......
but hey: there are always places who are loved by one and hated by others!
gandia-oliva-denia-javea-altea-benidorm-vilajoyosa-los alcazares-san juan-vera-garrucha and many more...... and for each one i know at least 5 people who love the area and 5 who hate it!

All,
Thanks for taking the time to reply, all of the places you have mentioned sound very nice and we will make a list and try to get to them all.
Rowlandsbb, Orihuela costa sounds like the ideal base so we will be looking at that, thankyou.
Has anyone else noticed that pacjage holidays are offering better value than renting an aprtment and booking flights seperately? well, it is the cheaper option for just the 2 of us, i suppose if you are a party of 4 or more then apartment rental and flights is probably the best option.
