Does anyone have any recent news on this? The last I heard the Murcia-Almeria section was effectively dead in the water (despite >€1bln already being spent on tunnelling etc) and I personally don't see it being revived anytime within the next decade, since I understand it needs many billions more before reaching Almeria (let alone Cordoba, which I believe was the original intention - to link in to existing AVE to Seville/Malaga) but what of Alicante-Murcia?

Are they keeping the classic line, and if not what is going to happen to the Cercanias service, and services using that route to head on to Cartagena and Lorca? I don't see how they could realistically re-use the Elche section for high-speed, as the existing tunnel through Elche city centre is (if I recall correctly) only single-track. The whole thing things a bit of a mess, actually - but I'd like to know just what is happening, and what's been dropped.

Tamara, I second the official schools - they are great value and very professional. Pretty much all the universities have one attached. One thing I would add is that to anyone in the UK (or elsewhere) even just beginning to *think* about relocating to Spain is start learning Spanish now, and don't stop, just keep at it and join an intercambio/language-exchange group to get real-world practice.

Check out the Instituto Cervantes. They are a government run cultural/language organisation with offices in most foreign capitals and secondary cities, and run excellent and professional language courses, including online with their AVE programme, as well as intensive (5 lessons/week) semi-intensive (2-3 lessons/week)  and evening/weekend courses. In London, if you sign up for their courses, you also get access to their library which has a slew of materials to practice with and they also run language-exchange groups and cultural events (Spanish film events etc) which give you more practice on something interesting.

The downside is as they are outside of Spain itself, they aren't subsidised, but if you are looking to start a new life in Spain, throwing a bit of money at good language tutition is a relatively small sum in the scheme of things, and it really is an investment in your future quality of life, work prospects etc.

I've got an interview in Madrid as it happens, so there definitely is more activity up on the meseta, but I wanted to put out feelers for other options too. Belts and braces, as they say!

That said, I wonder if unemployment may help out EFL teachers, as more people consider emigrating to UK/Ireland/Swden etc., in search of work?

Thread: Professional EFL Teacher – Looking for legal employment

Hi all,

I’m a linguistics graduate and CELTA qualified EFL Teacher (trained in Britain) looking to settle in Spain, and am looking to pursue my career there. I’ve lived in Spain before (though it was a while ago) and previously taught English as a foreign language as a freelancer (before I qualified, I must admit!) in Spain and South East Asia.

I’m looking for a long-term, legal position, though I’m open minded about area. I would prefer something near Almeria city (Roquetas, Aguadulce etc.) but I’m open minded and am happy to consider other regions, particularly around Alicante city (inc. environs), Cartagena city (inc. Mar Menor and Mazzaron), and also the Canary cities (Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Las Palmas and envrions)

This is my chosen career, and in return for a legitimate, above board contract with support and positive attitudes toward ongoing professional development, I do offer a long term and professional commitment. If you are interested then please do get in touch and I can provide more information. I am particularly interested in work with older children in Cambridge exam preparation, business English and English for work in tourism.
