Some years back I was advised by the Sol Bank that if I wrote a cheque using my then Nat West cheque book for £40.000 sterling making it payable to myself, and depositing it in my spanish bank, they would arrange a commercial rate for me, and my british bank would have to honour the cheque without any special charges being incured. It did happen that way the sol bank had some charges for the exchange but I remember it being very reasonable.
