Interesting that the UK is ranked 22nd, and Germany 26th!

I think you'll find that exactly the same sort of law applies in the UK.  If you purchase a vehicle (or bike) that has outstanding finance on it then the finance company has the right to chase you for the money or repossess the vehicle without giving you a refund. It really is important that a purchaser should do a car registration check before buying, but not sure how you do this is Spain.

To the best of my knowledge the 6 year rule applies from the date of the cause of action which basically means the time you first defaulted on any due payment, and also I think the rule only applies if you have in no way acknowledged the debt by payment or by letter.

As mentioned by previous contributors I think you will find the Citizens Advive Bureau very helpful in this situation - you will eventually find that your case is referred to one of their paid specialists and the service will cost you nothing and they will deal with everything for you provided you furnish them with all necessary information.  Be very wary of becoming involved with anyone who requires payment for their services, either before they start to work for you or as a percentage of the debt.

Sorry, manxmonkey, but although I agree that add-on charges for 'budget' airlines are a pain you, as a consumer, have the ultimate choice to but or not to buy.  What I would take issue with is your claim that debit card payments are in the company's bank account within seconds.  As a business owner I can assure you that you are lucky if they are in your account within 3 working days.  If a weekend intervenes then it takes 5 days and if there is a Bank Holiday then it takes 7 days. Business customers paid me on 4th April by debit card and the money was in our account on 11th April, and those paying on 5th April were credited to our account on 12th April. For the intervening 7 days the money was .....where?  And it is 25p per transaction for us - not 19p, although no doubt big companies get a better deal than we do.

It is a complete fallacy that debit card payments go into the payees account instantly.  By the way, the same timescale applies to credit card payments albeit with a percentage charge added, not a fixed fee.

I think you'll find, Orinoco, that there is not the demand in Australia these days for teachers of European languages - they are two a penny.  However, if your partner could teach Mandarin or Japanese then it would be a different matter.
