If you read the cover of your British passport, it says United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This means that an NI vehicle registration is part of the same DVLA database as a mainland British one. Many of the personal registration plate companies sell NI numbers as the older ones are not year related and therefore are a cheap way to get a personal plate.
