As several people have said- this is by no means unusual. We have met many instances of such helpful and kindly behaviour here in Spain. We live in a little village in northern Huelva - lovely green hillsides.
A note on watching Spanish TV to improve your language skills- open teletext page 888 ( available on most channels for deaf people) and you'll get Spanish sub-titles along with the picture, which we find help a lot in following dialogues.
