We drove 2 dogs we adopted in Spain back to the UK, got all the rabies tests etc, took 6 months, then got the last minute shots in France the day before sailing. We stayed in Ibis hotels all the way as they allowed both dogs, medium sized, in the room with us. They were a pointer/beagle cross and German Shepherd cross. The dogs liked the hotel too :). We came through the tunnel so just a short time and the dogs stayed in the car with us.

Brian, suggestion from here (not me) re Mrs M's photo shoot was that she should be on the toilet.

We drove 2 dogs from Spain to the UK in 2009. We'd chipped and passported them and they were on a Spanish database. You have to find a vet in France by the tunnel to give a working pill just before the tunnel, within 24hrs of travel, and we did that too. problem when we got home, not possible to put new chips in and not possible to put their entry on UK databases until just this year when after asking RSPCA and PDSA for 6 years we finally found one. They are in the process of being done. Possibly had to as many returnees with chipped pets now.

We messed up with the 2 cats. We did rabies vaccinations so they'd not need quarantine but messed up dates for blood tests and were 3 months short so they had to be taken over by a specialist ££££££ firm and and had 3 months in quarantine. We did visit in that time, drove to Dover. They turned their backs on us.  They didn't speak to us for 3 months or so after we got them back and have never been true lap cats since. They finally began occasional lap visits this year!

We did have a couple of holidays to house hunt. But I bought off plan in 2006, moved in 2007 and the crash came in 2008. I had retired but did get a p/t job at the new school they built next door.  My companion was fixing computers for Brits and that dried up from 2008. I missed my new grandchild and flew home to see him often.

At the beginning food etc was cheaper in Spain but then no longer.  Health Service was good. I loved the climate, food and people, and on our development there were Brits to make friends with as well as Spanish.  But missing family and the financial situation persuaded me to move back. Luckily I'd kept a granny flat. Unfortunately I lost 50% of the value of the flat I'd bought in Almeria when I finally managed to sell it.And I was lucky to sell. Properties on the development were unsold and it was going to affect maintenance as those were owned by the builder.

Renting had seemed a waste of money if I was going to buy. Money thrown away which could go to the value ofmy new home. But with hindsight of 20/20 I'd rent first and then after a year realise the crash had come and the loss of rental would be less than the 50% value Ilost in selling the flat :).
