Poetry About Spain - "Just landed"
Look over there, new ones just landed,
Can't you see them looking so stranded?
Quick, see the flashing light!
Come on let's run, keep out of their sight.
With one foot placed in the banana boat,
Struggling, trying to keep afloat,
Not quite there, still getting their bearings,
Before they become, oh so, daring.
"Expat community will issue a guide",
Truth is, they just run and hide,
"Once you get there, put feelers out".
Hello, that's not what we're about!
Old timers, they think "Just go away!"
"Our patch, you've got no right to stay!"
See you coming like a great big boulder,
Turn around, give you the cold shoulder.
Telling them what you've come to do,
Hearing the same stories since '82,
They don't care what you've been,
Already been, bought, done and seen.
Not quite on holiday, not quite at home,
"We're living here now, just as in Rome!"
Eating out, trying 'Payela', so tasty,
But yet, still looking so ill and so pasty.
Full of plans, quite idealistic,
As time goes by, a bit more realistic,
Disorientated, as they find their way,
Others start giving the time of day.
Bit out of balance, feeling quite dizzy,
Assumptions making your vision quite fizzy,
Just got here but "would never return",
Early days yet, still lots to learn.
You've come out here to make your mark,
Better look out for all the other sharks,
It's common you know, you're just another number,
This coast is not a place for slumber.
Ready and willing to learn the hard way?
Work really hard, without any pay,
Looking so keen and oh, so naïve,
If only you saw what I see up their sleeve.
Without a second thought for finance,
Too caught up with the romance,
The UK exodus en masse,
It's the locals they harass!
