On Spanish news tonight, the speed limit on motorways is to be reduced from 120kph to 110kph as from March 7th.  Reportedly to cut fuel consumption in these troubled Middle Eastern times.

Now there's a good job opportunity for those of you who claim there is no work to be had in Spain.  Just think of all those signs which will need to be repainted!

It's nothing to do with saving fuel as the only reduction of benefit is to reduce it to 90kph. It's the Spanish governments way of not having to reduce the tax on fuel which they would otherwise have to. There is no shortage of oil, even if Libya stops production completely the Saudis are already to cover the shortfall. The price is being driven up by speculators as shown by the $27 a barrel fall , to $93 overnight , when Reuters reported that Gaddafi had been shot. If that's all it takes to bring the price down perhaps there's a few others we could shoot !

More likely just a cynical attempt to catch and fine more speeding drivers. Easy way to bolster the public coffers - criminalise perfectly ordinary everyday activities, like driving your vehicle safely. I imagine this will just increase the number of rear end shunts.

As is generally the case in Spain, they can change the law as much as they want.

Whether the Spanish actually choose to ignore it or adhere to it is another matter.

I agree, I m pretty sure more fixed speed cameras will be springing up all over, no doubt disguised as palm trees.
