POLL: Should a politician charged with corruption step down?
Friday, February 8, 2013 @ 11:37 AM

1st poll :     327 unique participants and 16 comments. first week of voting

  2nd poll:    279 unique participants

Spain is amidst one of the largest corruption scandals to affect a political party. Parallel accounts and black money payments have even brought Spain's President into the picture, who is under suspicion too for receiving salary top ups in cash. With over 400 politicians and civil servants currently charged with crimes of corruption what should be the reaction of these people? Should they step down from their public duties until all suspicion has been cleared or should they stand their ground and continue working for the country until they are found guilty or innocent?

This time I will be running two parallel polls, one for politicians charged with corruption and another one on Mariano Rajoy, being The President of the country his situation is even more delicate and transcends international borders.

I don't see the problem. Resigning doesn't mean they're guilty. They can just make a statement that they are resigning until they clear their name. The problem is that they then won't get their salary and any other little or big extras that their position affords them. So much of what is going on comes down to money, money, money.

I voted yes, but how can one be sure that the accusers are not corrupt themselves?

Are there any professions in Spain free of those willing to take a bribe? It seems to be part of the Spanish Psyche..... Is there a pueblo that has not had a mayor who took money to allow buildings when he shouldn't? The city of Marbella had years of corrupt administration and the court case has been going on for years now.

Can corruption become so unacceptable that ordinary Spanish people make it quite clear they will not tolerate it? My impression is individuals think that if they can get away with it then "why not?" Some laws in Spain are broken regularly and even denuncias make no difference, presumably because there are bigger fish to fry.

Who would be a politician in Spain?!! Or anywhere....

As Spain seems to be alive with poor administration in all government areas. To prove any guilt of wrong doing would take so many years what would be the point of resigning.
After 6 years of waiting for our holiday complex to be granted a Habitation Certificate, and still we wait for the news of the local governing party to do the work needed so that we can spend our holidays in our lovely apartment. Who is committing the wrong doing. Without some sort of control. We like thousands of other in the same position will be waiting many more years. How did the current head of the Spanish Government receive approval to take the helm. The Spanish people voted him in ??????? the blame sits with the administrators who were advising the voters.

You mean like they do in the UK? Don't make me laugh. All politicians are corrupt. Look at the expenses fiasco in the UK or the fact that Bovis gave £1.5m to the Tories before the election and surprise, surprise, they relax the planning laws!

The same comments could apply to many countries certainly the UK has it’s large selection of corrupt politicians starting with Blair and Mandelson. Basically when you get to the top it opens wonderful opportunities. The UK Quangos are bribes to the elite in another name.

In a democracy you are innocent until proven guilty. No innocent person should lose their living. Having said that, if they are found guilty, they should throw the book at them.

My husband and I are victims of the corruption scandal. This has runined us as we had invested everything we had in a property in Lanjaron believing it to be legal. Unfortunately the Politicians do not want to know

The problem is with the speed of the law. It takes years to get to court and then the appeal process takes years after that. If its a politically motivated accusation, for the accused politician to step down and fight can effectively take them out of politics. The law is OK, it's its application that's the problem.

If corruption prevails at the highest levels in Spanish politics then it wilkl permeate the whole saystem which it has from the Cabinet to the Regions to the Provinces to the towns to the Villages to the People. Its institutionalised corruption and needs to be driven out by an external force from central Eirope on conditions for handouts (where the money is derived in the first place - much of it at least). The common defense os 'Others do it so its ok for me to do it'. So unless its driven out it won't change. The shadow economy is the key problem in Spain and must be resolved. Why isn't it? Because even those in power are hiding money.
Spain has dirty politicians and acts like a tin pot economy in Middle America OR Africa THAN THE FOURTH LARGEST ECONOMY IN Europe.
I don't think education will change anything. What's need is EU intervention urgently.
Yet they all pussyfoot around as they are afraid of central control..

salaries, management consultants with million pound government
contracts with non ex directors on government payrolls.Ex p.ms
being rewarded by big business for past favours. The list goes on.

Nothing the small man can do about it so just live your life and
