Spanish Street Dogs; the other Waifs and Strays.

Spanish Street Dogs; the other Waifs and Strays is about the many and varied dogs that we find around our village. Many are abandonados, some are just plain lost, all are real characters, mostly streetwise but occasionally foolhardy. These are some of the stories...

Earthlings...

Firstly see the wiki entry...

This is a very hard hittng film about mans treatment of Animals. Note the use of the capital A...

Animals generally have no rights; like us they didnt ask to be brought into this world, unlike us however they cannot effectively change their way of life, be they bred for 'sport', for food or as pets.

This is a very difficult film to watch; I defy anyone to watch this film and not come back a different person.

I'm not sure I can watch that. It will give me nightmares. It has been a hard enough week as it is.

I'm quite sensitive me, even though Susan says I'm like a robot!

I know exactly what you mean!

Definitely it's not for the faint hearted

I first came across 'Earthlings' in 2006 and some of the scenes are forever etched in my psyche.
It is an incredibly moving film, and should I think be made compulsory viewing (compulsory as in tied down and eyes held open as in Kubrick's Clockwork Orange) for anyone who maltreats or neglects their animals. Or for that matter people who consider that abattoirs are places where animals are always killed humanely.

One subscriber to the EOS forum recently stated that he thought the fine of 200Euros made against a G.C. officer who shot dead a sleeping dog and then tossed it into the garbage bins, was a little OTT.
Considering that he had been told to capture the animal and return him to his owner, a 200 Euro fine is nothing; hell you can get fined this amount for a relatively minor traffic offence.

Another subscriber to the forum stated openly that he uses a 'Super Squirter Water Gun' filled with a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar sprayed directly into the dogs face and eyes... "Its not really cruel," he said... Why not go the whole hog and buy some pepper spray and use that? Vinegar can permanently blind animals.

Yet another subscriber was bleating on about the actions of us 'King Canute' do-gooders that try to do something constructive for the Waifs, Strays and Abandonados. Look, we know we cant save 'em all, and we don't need cold-hearted comments like his. King Canute was in fact trying to make a point... he knew he couldn't turn the tide... he was trying to make a point. We know that we cannot do a lot given the worldwide nature of the problem.
What is needed internationally is government subsidies to help organisations and charities, to vets to enable them to charge a nominal figure for neutering and spaying. The funding necessary could be raised from the insane profits made by animal feed companies and the pharmaceutical corporations. It was corporations like these who were responsible for things like mad cow disease and the resulting CJD which was direct result of their greed.

So far as Spain is concerned and its attitude to animals... Its probably no worse here overall than anywhere else. Bullfighting, bull baiting such as occurs in Denia, the bull run in Pamplona, all amount to the same thing; the gratuitous torture of animals for the pleasure of others. Going back to the GC Officer who murdered a sleeping dog, the guy should be taken unarmed to the nearest bull-ring and made to face 650kgms of charging bull. This would provide a hithertoo unseen level of entertainment for the blood-thirsty punters and at least ensure that one bull came out alive at the end of the day.

To those who say "Animal Cruelty is not my problem," I would say 'rubbish'. It became your problem the first time you moaned about dogshit or barking dogs. Its eveyone's problem...
