Morning everyone (if anyone is reading this!),

I don't normally watch things I consider spin, but last night I watched "Costa del Crime" on SKY,and have to say I think it must be a propaganda programme to change the British public's opinion of coming to Spain.

They major on several areas, which at the moment I won't divulge, but the stabbings, muggings, hold ups, scams and what have you are could be a worry. Not to me however, and the quarter of a million of expats who seem to be doing OK. Just warns me to be a little more careful and a bit choosier where to live. I will now watch further programmes, repeats I think but still news and further experiance for my locker.

A few years ago they did a programme called "Trouble in Paradise" where they reported of untold problems in Thailand - load of rubbish. As long as you beware, of the scams etc. Thailand is one of the best places to live in the world.

Hi - I live in the southern Costa Blanca and have always felt safe here. I was a Social Worker in Glasgow for 30 years so I have seen a fair bit of violence and aggression in my time, but in 4 years here I have only seen two fights - both were between British people!
The biggest crooks here are the banks, but that seems to be the same in the UK at the moment. You do need to be careful with your personal possessions and I suppose there will be an increase in crime due to the financial mess the country is in, but I would still choose Spain any day in relation to personal safety.
I also think that this area is much quieter than the Costa del Sol and is more residential, with no big hotels or clubs etc, so that probably makes a difference too.

Thanks Claire,
this is very re-assuring although the bars on every window can be disconcerting, to me they look like prisons.
Seems to me to be the British yobs goading the Spanish yobs.
However I am looking around by you as well as further towards Malaga. Yea banks throughout the world are taking advantage at this time.

Sorry I came to reading your blog late on but I'm now catching up! I'm not sure that right on the Costa del Sol is the best place to retire but not because of the crime. We've holiday'd around that area alot and never had any problems. They may take the footage for those programes over a very long period of time or just get all the bad and lump it together! I too have watched them on the tv! The bars are not particularly great to look at but they at least serve a purpose and almost every house has them. You need to think about whether you want to live in an area full of expats or an area where there are a mix of nationals and others. You'll find a fair few Dutch, German and English in many towns so you make friends with a variety of people. We're heading inland abit so we're away from the tourist areas which makes eating out etc... more epensive, and we want to try the 'Real Spain'.
