Is the dream dead?

I came home from Spain last week feeling very disappointed, dispondent, dejected, full of cold & seriously re-considering my future

I suppose climbing down the stairway off the plane at Malaga airport in the pouring rain did not help. I had anticipated the cold & bought a couple of heavy jumpers, but did not think I needed a coat - bad decision.

The following day the rain was torrential, jumpers keep out the cold but not the driving rain & to add to that the Estate Agent with whom I had an appointment "has not come in this morning as she is sick. Pop back this afternoon she will speak to you then" What a waste of time. The rest of the week really did not improve although the the two other "house salesmen" were really good & helpful both doing their best to find me something akin to my interests.

So after a week of almost continous rain and several soakings, horror of horrors, I was ready & looking forward to flying home. To compound the issue I had developed a very nasty heavy cold.

So for the next few days I pondered & thought, thought & pondered.

There were very strong reasons why I should remain in England, everybody (well almost) speaks English, better the devil you know, so many people rely on me, who'll do all the work if I'm gone? I will be leaving my daughters & 4 grandchildren, my sister & close cousin, maybe the weathers not too bad if I wrap up warm, I won't be able to watch my football teams, I won't have all the hassle of changing everything to Spanish. And everyone tells me I am making a mistake as expats are all streaming back to the UK.

So that's it I'll stay in England & give up my 40 year dream, it was only a pipe dream anyway, I was a fool to consider it anyway.

With this heavy cold I had been very lazy & there was loads of things I left undone, I was feeling very sorry for myself. Then I looked again at this forum, which I had ignored recently. I read a private message which brought a tear to my eye & read all the words of encouragement & of a friend who had sold her house & was bubbling with excitement and unbelievably there were offers to help me in the villages of Spain. Ummm am I making haste quickly!

The following morning I looked out of the window & watched the neighbours scraping the ice from their cars in preparation to go to work, glad I don't work any longer! So it's on with the big coat, heavy shoes, scarf & gloves & out to fetch a newspaper.

Brrr it's cold out here, never mind I'll be home in five minutes  -  then it started to sleet right in my face ........ that's it dream back on, I'll start again re-energised I'll start the work for emmigration again.

We'll come back again in January hopefully to meet some friends & see what we can do. Google here I come, Ryanair, Monarch who's gonna give me the best deal?

Gerry,
I had the same issues as yourself (pressure from all directions)

I have had the dream of living in Spain longer than I can remember, I am aware of my circumstances and that is why I bought early before retirement age to allow me the best of both worlds and get my affairs in order so to speak, because of lifes little ups and downs (divorce and remarraige ) my retire at 55 plan went out window, and now I make the most of my circumstances and am lucky that my job allows me quite a bit of extended time off when I imput more time when in UK so I can spend time in Spain I love it and will be there in 2 weeks time, bad weather or not LOL.

Do not give up just re adjust your visions and dreams.

James.

Hi
I live and work in Spain and upto now i am still enjoying, i am afraid to say the weather at the moment is torrential rain but you adjust , the winters are generally wet but the summers are longer and warm which suits me , I have seen alot of people go back to UK but all of them have not regretted and enjoyed there time in Spain , better to try rather than thinking what IF, hope it helps.

Thanks James, I know you have followed & helped a lot & Helen one of the factors was the "what if?" so I simply have to proceed, your comment does help thank you.

That's the spirit, Gerald. It's better to know that the weather isn't always glorious, but generally it is bright and sunny over there. I popped into one of the Chinese shops on my first morning there and bought two brollies (tourists must have done something to the ones that we always keep in the house), and we also all wore jackets over - it was literally a last minute decision as I left our house in Wales. So, if you changed your dreams and plans of the last 40 years because of the lack of a coat and some rubbish estate agents, that wouldn't be right. So, on with the planning and let us know how you get on. I've just bought flights for my husband and his friend for £42 return in December (Bristol to Malaga with Ryanair and nice times too), so the deals are good as usual. Let us know how the plans and thoughts progress. All the best. Eggie.

That's the spirit, Gerry. You are doing things right and taking your time.

You might not think so now, Gerry, but if you come to live in Spain permanently you will be GLAD (may even pray for it lol) to see the rain after months and months on end of searing heat with no respite. I can remember standing out in the rain and letting myself get soaked through. Oh, the luxury of it.

In the decades I have lived in Spain I always somehow managed to get away at least for August, and if possible for July and August. It is god-awful hot from even beginning June to end September, at least I think so.

Then again the weather is only one factor, maybe not even the most important. I know there are good times in Spain ahead of you, Gerry.

thank you Eggie & Patricia your support is wonderful & that is another reason I have to keep trying.
In fact another thought occurred to me that when I eventually get to Spain (please God!) I'd like to buy you all a drink, only one though, don't wanna be accused of getting anyone three sheets to the wind!

Gerry - don't do it because we're all hoping you will! Do it because you've wanted it for forty years and because Spain is where you and your wife want to grow old together :-)

Hope to join in that drinks gathering!

Yes indeed, I agree with Tamara. But you know you want to otherwise you wouldn't have booked your flights! I would love to meet up with you so long as you're not a million miles away!! Tamara, too as she doesn't live too far away from where we'll be! Maybe we should have an Eye on Spain (re) union? Can't really have a reunion as we've never met but a get together would be fun! Keep looking on the internet and keep exploring Spain until you find YOUR piece of paradise! We're almost halfway there now...... :)

You know Louise I think a union when we are all securely esconced in Spain in the lovely sunny weather in the Spring or Summer would be a great idea. Just think of the fortunes, misfortunes & tales we could exchange.

Yes it could be an interesting time! We will definitely try to get something sorted! Think positive.

Interesting reading Gerry, but I don't know, you come across as a total worrier and a ditherer, so much so you'll probably never make the move. If I was you I'd stop using all your energy keeping a blog and get on with finding that property, if you can't find an ideal property in Spain in this economic climate you never will. As for the rain in Spain, of course it does, and you were just unlucky, I travelled from France to Gibraltar and back to Bilbao in a December on a motorbike and had glorious sunshine everyday although the temp can dip in the mountains, the coast was 15-19 at day time every day. STOP BEING SCARED - what's the worst that can happen PS. any news on the residency laws for your wife in Spain?

Bloom me Glynn this was about 9 posts & 3 months ago, we've moved on since then. And as for writing a blog it takes me about 20 minutes, gives me & others pleasure & is a history for everyone to read including me.
I NEVER worry, not scared & certainly AM NOT A DITHERER but by taking care make very few bad decsions or mistakes. Read on you'll see great progress has been made.
As regards residency for my wife it no problem being married to an EU Citizen.
