Well the time arrived and we were sitting on the Ryanair 737 aircraft flying to Malaga. Leaving 20 minutes early we landed 40 minutes early, but that was OK by me. Mobosol Car Hire were waiting for us & less than fifteen minutes later we were driving to Colmenar & our hotel home for a few days. The sat nav was nightmare & as I drove, Phet just could not get in to it.

Waiting for us outside the hotel in the warm sun was Tamara (now everybody knows Tamara!!), who had kindly consented to help us until she flew to England 3 days later. I have to say Tamara was really wonderful as our guide, translater & sometime estate agent. We were completely helped by her and her assistance was invaluable & I sadly began to rely on her. She also helped to fix the dreadful satnav. The best though, she said I wasn't as grumpy as I look on my picture! Thank you Tamara.

So! a plan of action for the next fews days was mapped out with several properties under scrutiny, then back to Tamara's for a cup of tea (why do the British seem only to make nice tea?) & a tour of her lovely home. Then going on one of her wonderful morning walks & I wondered if she'd rent it to me. She is totally in love with the Almond blossom, but it is beautiful.

Phet & I went back to the hotel & had a quick drink (or in Phet's case "two or three"), then off to bed in readiiness for a full day. Tamara arrived spot on at 10.00am & said she would drive (who had told her about my "rally driving") & we spent the morning driving to some villages looking at properties, which for various reasons were rejected. All the owners were really kindly & good people, but it were'nt the people we were viewing. Popping into Maria's Bar for a quick bite our quest continued into the afternoon, no siesta's here! We looked at a property in Riogordo but from the outside only as the owner was not available, shame that as the house looked promising. All possibilities, but no real joy & feeling comfortable . We met up with Tamara again in the evening taking part in a quiz. (Don't ask how we did, but we did go home with a wooden spoon!). But there was good news, Tamara had managed to contact the owner of house we had viewed from the outside & we could now see it from the inside as she had adjusted her plans just for us. The house inside was lovely, close to the centre of the village & Phet could possibly set up her hairdressing salon their. Ummm careful thought is needed here. Riogordo is a lovely place, they even have coffee bar in the Town Hall!

The scouting trip continued & I was wondering if Tamara was getting a little worried as she was leaving for England the next morning & she had not packed or prepared anthing yet. The final house of the day was in Colmenar in the mountains, quite cool & windy their. So mid afternoon we parted company, us to continue looking and investigating & Tamara to pack etc.

We had two chances left a house in Sadella on Sunday morning and an appointment with an Estate Agents in Puente Don Manuel to maybe look at properties around the Lake (Vinuella). Was my optimism and dream of 40 years again about to be dashed? Sure the houses in Riogordo were OK but somehow just didn't "hit the spot". Perhaps I was being to choosy & picky. But looking back over the last 3 days Phet & I decided that the best house we had seen was .............................................. Tamara's.

Enough now I'll continue soon to tell you about the next  four days, watch this space !!!!!!

Glad you survived Mick Air and weather was kinder, looks like Tamara came up trumps with local knowledge and assistance (well done Tamara).
Look forward to next installment.

Take care
James

I knew you would reply Tamara but my next blog is when you have left us & we are on our own! How did we manage without our shining light?

James, good name that "Mick Air" but have to take as I find & they've never let me down. The next part won't be long!

Oh Gerald, my heart had a little skip and jump when I saw the title of this latest Blog! We looked at some houses to rent as a holiday rental in Puente don Manuel and I didn't like it one little bit as it seemed like a huge Expat estate! Maybe we didn't see it all but I didn't even want to stay there for a holiday! Its good that you saw some properties or one perhaps, that you liked! A couple of websites I can recommend (if I'm allowed to put them on?) are www.gatewayto andalucia.com and www.simplyandalucia.com (I think!). They both cover some nice areas. I will look forward to meeting up with Tamara later in the year when we move over. Her house is not a million miles away from ours (almost!). I can't wait for the next Blog from you, its getting very exciting! :)

Thanks Louise for your comment, I always value your thoughts. I'll talk about Puente Don Manuel later in my blog. I have looked at many sites including the your two suggestions, (thank you for that), but in the end found it much better to run mainly on recommendations & this is what I largely did. But all will be revealed soon. Glad you are meeting up with Tamara in time & if permitted would like to "pop over" & join you.

Hi Gerald, of course it would be lovely to meet you and your wife when you find your place. I've not been to Colmenar so would love for Tamara to show us around her town. What sort of property are you looking for (apart from one the same as Tamara's!)and what sort of budget? I will keep an eye out. Have you looked on the 'Think Spain' property website? No doubt you have but just checking! You said you were going to Pm me but I haven't received anything to my knowledge. My email if its easier is louisefenton9097@aol.com :)

Hi again, Gerald! I've been waiting to see how you got on in Spain on this latest visit. We also love Tamara's house...and Tamara, whom you've discovered for yourself is a lovely lady. Her house is just the sort of place we would choose for ourselves - a real find. When we finally bought the place we had in Catalunya (an old town house that we spent months updating before we could move into it) we had spent months looking at property before we found the right one...the one that we felt could be home. You could be lucky and find what you're looking for on the first day of a 2-week property-finding visit or it could take a longer visit. We never saw as many properties in a day or a week as we would have liked. We hadn't factored in the length of time it takes to get from one village to the next or the lhe fact that it is not always convenient to the owner to show someone round their property at a time that's right for the viewer. However, the place you want is out there somewhere, just waiting for you to discover it.

Looking forward to the next installment! Keep writing...

Maddie I suppose really I was looking for a house exactly like Tamara's but didn't know it until I saw hers. When she showed us around it I felt almost jealous! I'd looked at lovely villa's in the beautiful countryside, new houses in a little complex, apartments in Nerja etc but never really felt comfortable with any of them. I even looked at a double glazed, insulated, centrally heated house but something was missing. It was seeing Tamara's lovely Spanish home that I knew what I wanted.

So good to read you Gerald and glad you are making progress. It is so wonderful to have someone as your guiding light in your search, and Tamara is the soul of kindness, I can see. I entirely agree, recommendations is the way to go.

My husband used to call our home "the Consulate", because, like Tamara, we were glad to give friends or even very newly introduced friends the benefit of our knowledge, and a chance to brainstorm their ideas as to what they wanted in and from Spain. Having lived in Spain all my life, and with relative ease, it has to be said, as regards, bureaucracy and all the rest, IMo the way one approaches things is the secret.

I do hope at some time to meet the now legendary Tamara. Maybe in Málaga city..?
It really warms my heart to see people helping out others instead of cutting the ground from under them (well, you know where....).

All the best
Patricia..

P.S. Gerald, I find Ryanair quite all right too.

Thsnk you Patricia for your lovely comments. I also think I am very lucky to have had (so far) Tamara as my "beacon in the storm"
I am determined that if (when!) I finally get installed in Spain to arrange a meeting of the "nice people" on this forum. The trouble Spain is such a big place this may not be possible for everyone & even worse for the ones in Wales & Scotland.
Ryanair were 10 minutes late on the return because of a strong head wind & could not apolgise enough, I love 'em.

Gosh I won't dare show anyone else my house - it can't possibly live up to its reputation now! Looking forward to the gathering though :-). And Patricia, yes let's meet in Málaga soon!
