A writer's perspective on Spanish life

My blog is about living in Spain and how the culture and history of the country have influenced my writing.

What does Spain owe to the Moors?
Thursday, May 29, 2014 @ 10:29 AM

One of the advantages of writing books about Spain is that you have a great excuse to trot about the countryside investigating things.  During the research for my novel THE SHINING CITY we visited Córdoba numerous times - not an arduous task and only two hours drive from Málaga.  We made three trips to Madinat al-Zahra (my husband wanted to know why I couldn’t get it all down the first time) and made a couple of visits to Bobastro and Ardales.

10th century Spain was a period in history that I knew very little about and I was fascinated to learn just how much Spain owes to the Moorish occupation of the peninsula, even down to everyday items.  It wasn’t just the type of food they ate that has been passed down but also the way they ate it: the Moors introduced menus and a series of different courses for each meal; they used tablecloths and cutlery and different plates for each dish.  Some of their dishes were cooked exactly the same way they are today.  There is a restaurant in Córdoba that has a lamb tagine on its menu that is identical to a 10th century recipe. For those of you that like churros, you’ll be interested to know that it was as popular then as it is now.

The Moors were a nation obsessed with water and cleanliness and had not only ornamental lakes and fountains but public baths, individual latrines and running water to wash in.  They had an elaborate network of underground conduits for collecting rainwater from the courtyards and sewage from the latrines and kitchens.

Society was divided along ethnic and religious grounds but it was more egalitarian than one would suspect.  There were four main divisions: the Arabs, the Berbers, the Muwallads and the Dhimmi (Christians and Jews).  The first three were all Muslim.  The Arabs made up a small percentage of the population but they were the ones with the power and they brought their language and culture to Spain.  The Berbers were from North Africa and they mainly populated the countryside.  The Muwallads were Muslims of Iberian descent; they adopted the language and religion of the Moors and by 10th century there was very little distinction between them and the Arabs.  The last group, the Dhimmis was made up of Christians and Jews.  The Christians were numerous but the Jews only made up 5% of the population.

Jews, Christians and Moors lived in harmony; they were all montheistic faiths, all people of The Book.  The Jews and Christians were not persecuted by the Muslims and could hold important posts in society and even in government.  It was a society with great social mobility and people could move from humble beginnings to positions of power.  Muslim men could even marry Jewish women, but not the other way round.

Women too had more freedom than one would imagine; they did not have to cover their faces with a veil but wore a crotcheted cap instead.  Many women were educated and worked as physicians, scribes and teachers.  Some were wealthy in their own right and set up endowments for libraries and schools.  They were often allowed to keep their own dowries and were allowed to inherit property.  Those of you who have read my book DAUGHTERS OF SPAIN will see how different this was from women’s position under Franco a thousand years later.

It was a society that valued education and treated its scholars and artists with respect.  Córdoba in the 10th century had more than seventy libraries, fifty hospitals and some of the best universities in the civilised world.  Sadly much of that was destroyed when the Moors were expelled from Spain in the 15th century.

Wonderful that people on the Costa are taking an interest in "real Spain." I have lived here a long time and have studied Spanish history all my life. I happened to catch a British programme (on You Tube) the other night called "When the Moors ruled in Europe." It was fascinating although I knew the "gist" of it already, it was nice to see it on film. All of the academics and professors taking part were Spanish and all said that the Spanish history taught in schools is a complete lie and mostly Catholic propaganda. Quite how Islam became so cruel and barbaric remains a mystery ! Córdoba was the biggest, greatest and most advanced city in the world at the time.

Nobody has really explained how this amazing civilisation fell to pieces but it is thrilling to live in "Al Andalus," the cradle of modern civilization and it is thrilling to live in Spain, probably the most important country on earth since Rome. Forget the bloody climate; it's not all it's cracked up to be!

I missed that BBC documentary but I've found it on you-tube. Looking forward to watching it. Thanks for your comments

I too have read about the good old days in the Iberian Penisular with all the religions living in peace so one has to ask what went wrong? During the reign of Philipe and Isobella, from memory, El Cid, with the King and Queens' approvals, fought and drove out the Moors. So what changed the peaceful times?

It took a number of years for all the Moors to be expelled from Spain, the last being 1492 with the fall of Granada. I don't know how attitudes changed but the little I know of the Muslim religion it seems a peaceful and tolerant religion - it's just how some groups of people have decided to interpret it over the years. Exactly when it began to change who can say but I expect it was more to do with power than religion

There's a book your readers might find enjoyable and informative. The book is titled "The Ornament of the World, How Muslims, Jews and Christiians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain" by the late Maria Rosa Menocal. It has great insights on the nearly 800 years the Moors inhabited this lovely land. A great read for those of us who find the history of Spain fascinating!

** EDITED - Against blog rules **progressive politically correct "revisionist" history. The Moors invaded, murdered, raped and pillaged their way across the Middle East, North Africa and Iberia. ** EDITED - Against blog rules ** And their murderous rampage would have continued into Europe if not stopped first by Charles Martel at the Battle of Poitiers and then later by his grandson Charlemagne, and at the Gates of Vienna by the Poles.** EDITED - Against blog rules **, if you refused to convert to Islam you had only 2 choices, death and indentured servitude. What you call casually being a "dhimmi", as if it was something without cruelty or cost. Dhimmi's had to pay tribute to the caliphate, were forced to wear different clothes, and with the rare exception were treated as second class animals. If they failed to pay tribute, worshipped openly, or spoke of Muhammad with wrong tone, then back to option 1, death. As for the Reconquista, it was not surprising that after 700 years of occupation and servitude, that the native Christian population chose their freedom over the ridiculous allure of your "dreamy" cascading fountains in the Sultan's palace, a game of chess, or a spoon. Give me a break! If there's any doubt about the joy of the people to finally vanquish the invaders, one just has to look at the centuries of celebrations that followed and persist to this day in Spain. Or is that some vast right wing conspiracy? Then despite ** EDITED - Against blog rules **once they were vanquished, you can still see from Portugal to Italy the remnants of the people's fear of their return. All along the Med there remain Saracen Towers which were used to alert the people of attack by Muslim pirates or invasion. ** EDITED - Against blog rules **No, they were built as the last refuge from death, destruction and slavery again at the hands of Islam. Who continued to rape and pillage for centuries, even during the time of Thomas Jefferson, who formed the Marine's to stop them.** EDITED - Against blog rules **

Hmmmm, pretty touchy about "editing". Just for the reader to know, not a single curse word was used. But it's not really a surprise. Under the guise of tolerance, if you refuse to ignore 1500 years of Islamic history and aggression, or if you won't swallow the Religion of Peace "progressive" kool-aid, then your thoughts and speech are censored. Now that's truly tolerant.

What an amazingly vicious, vindictive, vituperative diatribe ! Are you drunk or are you taking something ? I am very surprised that such as nasty e-mail "got through the net." My condolences; I hope you will be feeling much better in the morning ! (Although going to Eye on Spain web site, I see that your ranting mania has been moderated).

It is hardly worth replying to such tripe but a few facts may help calm you down. First of all, I am not a tourist ! I live here and have done so for a very long time. Secondly, I have been a student of Spanish History for probably longer than you have been alive. Thirdly, I totally detest Islam and regard it as a barbaric and savage religion- rather as I regard you ! I did not once use the word "Dhimmi" in what I wrote so you must be referring to somebody else !! I did not know what the word meant until last night. The only "Dimmy" I know is you !

However, being of an open and always enquiring mind, I have gradually become aware that I am not being told the truth. In the programme to which I refer, even though it was in English programme (and quite a good one at that), all of the historians involved were top Spanish historians. Not English. They make the point that most of Spanish history that is taught in schools is Catholic propaganda, strongly reinforced by General Franco. And that is absolutely obvious since the Muslims lasted for almost 800 years in Spain. It can't have been all bad. I have been trying, for fifty years, to get the true picture.

I detest Islam almost as much as I detest the Monster Raving Loony Party (who calls himself Rubicon Cross) but I am, sadly, forced to conclude that your crazy tirade isn't even directed at me at all since I certainly did not use any of the words (such as "Religion of Peace" and many, many others). No matter ! I like a good fight against Muslims and nutters!

Have a good night's sleep and I hope you will soon be feeling better.

Dear NROSullivan,

First, this is what's called a "blog". Perhaps a new concept to you. Where the comments therein are supposed to refer to the main article unless addressed otherwise.

So just a hint, the world doesn't revolve around you and my comment here had nothing to do with you. In fact, until I saw your nasty little response I hadn't even read your comment.

However since you have chosen to Cross the Rubicon and needlessly pick a fight, you might want to take a fresh look in the mirror first. Your reply was far more personal and vicious in its attacks than my comment ever was. Which solely took firm issue with the author's ridiculous claims and false premise to begin with. Where today it's become so "fashionable" to love Islam and blame everyone else first.

Yet interestingly enough, your reply did not dispute nor deny any of the historical facts I referenced. Yet somehow you claim to have an open mind and are a seeker of truth? Somewhat difficult to believe given your vacuous reply. I suppose as long as "your truth" is not disturbed by the inconvenience of facts?

Also, you amazingly deem yourself to be a so-called expert in Spanish history "longer than I have lived" ? Yet the concept of "Dhimmi" was totally unknown to you? How could that possibly be, as it is one of the main tenets of Islam? While at the same time, still claiming to be such an expert on the Moorish occupation of Spain. Hmmm? Rather shoots down that "expert" thing of yours, doesn't it?

I can also guarantee to you that the concept of Dhimmi was very well understood and hated by the non-Muslim inhabitants of Spain who continued to fight for centuries where they could, or refused to convert to Islam or pay tribute as a Dhimmi, often punished by death for more than 700 years. Whci remained until the native inhabitants were liberated in 1492 at the final battle of Granada. Did you not know about that important bit of history either?

Maybe you should do a little research on the origins and works of King Ferdinand and Isabella while you’re at it. Or do you even know who they were? Expert? Really? Oh and by the way, Dhimmitude still exists today. Christians and infidels are being forced to pay or die all across Africa and the Middle East as we speak. Some things never change.

And in saving the best for last, regarding my sleep. I sleep just fine thank you. My conscience is clear in the knowledge of rational historical fact. It’s not deluded by some TV series, a 2-bit revisionist documentary, or just another Islamo-apologist author, drunk on either the romance of an era that never was, or on selling books.

Whereas for you, given the hate that you spewed forth needlessly, I suggest you get off the Geritol Pablum and try reading a few actual history books, instead of watching television. Preferably books written sometime before Franco (if you prefer), during which time they had more than 700 years of choices available to get the history right. Take your pick. And in any case, certainly before the "re-education" of the masses began recently preaching only the fool's version of history. Where a peaceful world would certainly exist, if we just keep apologizing and willingly submit to a wonderfully beautiful world, ruled by Islam. No thank you.

Oh and yes, please don’t forget to take your blood pressure pills before bed, darling.
