At a time when the local council is doing its best to promote tourism and investment in property, Montejaque (Malaga) is losing bars and restaurants at an alarming rate.

Just recently one of the three bars in the square, the much loved La Melli, closed its doors for good. The remaining two do not open in the evenings except for one which does open at the weekends.
Compared to six years ago when I wrote about the high number of hostelries per head of population, 13 at the time, I reckon we are now down to just eight.
Two in the square, La Roca and El Rincon, La Chica around the corner, Don Adrian, up an alley opposite, but only open at weekends.
Further down the village are La Grulla, lunch and dinner, and El Altillo, breakfast and lunch.
Close by are Copas HV, evenings only, and Bar 31, pm only.

This offer is not enough to sustain a village of nearly 1000 inhabitants plus the many visitors who come to walk, bird-watch and cycle in the magnificent scenery in this part of the Serrania de Ronda.
So, come on Diego (the mayor), you and your fellow councillors need to get your thinking caps on and come up with some strategies to reverse this decline. If not, Montejaque will surely die over the next few years.
