Disillusioned expats take property battle to EU Petitions Committee

Maura Hillen, president of Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No (AUAN), the group set up to fight for the legalization of illegal properties bought in good faith, will put forward the case of innocent homeowners who are faced with the loss of their homes without hope of compensation; live without electricity and water; or who face having to pay their developers' debts.
She said: "These abuses contravene the EU Treaty and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and these laws must be respected and complied with by Spain."
The eight-minute petition will argue that urban planning abuse in Spain is an attack on the fundamental pillars of EU law relating to the free movement of capital and the free movement of people, on the basis that citizens from other member states have invested in thousands of properties yet cannot disinvest or leave the country (by selling their properties), given that they have been told that their property is illegal.
