Having the constant urge to find new adventures on a budget has always been a great way to travel, I enjoy the challenge of finding the cheapest possible way to travel, many would say that I am "tight fisted" but why pay more than you have too.
Here's one of my journey's;
Having completed a seasonal restaurant contract in the Canadian Rockies, I was working out how to get back home to Nova Scotia on the East Coast of Canada, some 3000 miles away. The simple route would be to get a three hour bus ride to Edmonton Airport, then a four hour flight back to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The cost would had been around $400 or 260 Euro's, but where's the fun in that!
No, I decided to do the scenic route, I left Jasper on a cold winters day, the snow was covering the roads as we made our way to Banff in a battered mini bus, the three hour drive took us on one of the world's most senic routes, glorious snow covered peaks set the scene for the entire trip. We arrived in Banff, I headed for the local YMCA hostel, the price was $20 per night, great price when most hotels in Banff would in the $70-$140 range. The hostel was clean, but the room had four bunk beds, shared with seven other travelers, so there I am, a forty something, Englishman, sharing a dorm with pot smoking, drunken ski boarders. I stayed there for a few days, before heading out to Calgary via public bus, my plan was to get to Calgary, then hitch hike up to Edmonton.
The plan was going well, I picked up a ride in Calgary, and arrived safely at Edmonton Airport. After a night sleeping at the airport, I used the airports internet to find a carshare website, a oil worker with a pickup truck was looking for someone to help with the driving on the 3000 mile journey to the East Coast, we were going to drive non stop, a 60 hr drive across Canada, this is where my adventures really began.......I will post part two next week.
You might be thinking what has this to do with Spain, I live in Canada at the moment, but my next adventure starts in May, I will be relocating to Southern Spain with my family.
This is also my first blog ever, so please forgive any errors!
