Top Dog-Friendly Beaches in Spain
Friday, September 12, 2014 @ 6:04 PM

The truth is that the number of Spanish beaches where you can go with a dog is pretty poor. Especially when you compare it to the 450 beaches in the UK or the nearly 200 in France, and even more so when you consider that more and more people travel with dogs everyday and coastal tourism is one of the main economic engines of the country with over 2,200 kilometres of sandy beaches. But believe it or not you can only go with your dog to about 50 beaches in Spain, and some even with time restrictions. So it is even more important to know which beaches are dog friendly because the fines can be pretty hefty. I have managed to pull together the top 30 recommended by dog owners so If you have a dog I hope you have one of these beaches nearby.

Spain got spot on why are dogs not allow on the beach ???
When owners allow them to foul and not remove it.
The beach is a thing of beauty not a toilet for dogs

My sentiments entirely. I'm glad to see that none of the beaches in my part of the Costa del Sol is listed. Not that that seems to deter many dog owners who seem to think that regulations regarding public safety and hygiene do not apply to them

I'm a dog owner and animal lover but i agree with JSB above, the beach is a place of beauty not a toilet. If some dog owners were more responsible then perhaps more beaches would open up.
To be honest who wants to take a dog on a hot beach anyway.

I have two dogs and am a frequent visitor to many beaches in Spain and do not take my dogs as I DO follow regulations.

However I should like to point out that almost every time I go to the beach which is usually in the late afternoon I see it littered with rubbish that adults have left and not bothered to put in the bins, having said this the bins are mostly overflowing by this time. I have even experienced soiled nappies!!! I agree that all beaches are places of beauty, however to blame dogs only for spoiling them is not true. It is the fault of irresponsible humans and the council officials for lack of bins and the few irresponsible dog owners.

Enjoy your weekend!!

The discussion is about dogs on beaches - not adults!
We are all aware that people leave litter and often the bins that are provided are inadequate to cope with the traffic.
What we do not need are dogs fouling the beaches since it is impossible to collect their pee and often you see the owners, empty plastic bag in hand and only bothering to collect the faeces if somebody is watching.
Its easy for the U.K. to have 450 "doggie" beaches since the majority are a risk to all due to the discharge of raw sewage close to the shoreline.

Having grandchildren who always find things on beaches that you don't want them to like "dog turds",I totally agree with the views above. It is the irresponsible dog owners that don't clean up up after their pets that have caused this situation.
Ironically the Number 1 item to pollute the sea and beaches are cigarette stubs.I never realised so many dogs smoked!!

How rediculous! As if every dog (owner) has no resposibility!
Come on Kanjer, we go to the beach.

We walk on the beach at Calahonda to either La Cala or Puerto Cabopino, there are no shortage of dogs on it. Most of the dogs are Spanish owned and I have noticed them cleaning up their dog's mess, however off beach dog mess is far worse than it is in the UK.

I suppose that if local Spanish councils throw loads of cash at beach cleaning/raking etc; they can expect these beaches to be dog free. However I can't recall the Blackpool donkey ride owner ever cleaning up his business partner's mess.

Playa Genoves in the cabo de gata, & I think other ones there as well allows dogs (unless changed in the last few months as I don't go in the summer when very hot), my dogs love it there I go down in the winter many people walk their dogs there including Spanish but you hardly ever see dog mess so people must be clearing it up. You get to these beaches from San Jose, I would recommend

Has the new UK dog mess clean up system appeared in Spain yet? This is where the owners bag their dog's mess and then tie it to a bush or tree, hang it on a gate or fence, or simply throw it on the ground.

The mind boggles.

Surely the subject of dogs on beaches is not all about fouling. I would not be happy to spend time at a beach where I may be bothered by dogs. Dog owners should not expect everyone to love their dogs or want their attention. Keep dogs away from beaches and away from me, thank you.

Hephaestus said:

I suggest that people who don't like dogs keep away from dog friendly beaches.

rbjenkins said:

Dog friendly beaches - How we love our euphemisms!
These beaches might be friendly to the dogs - but how friendly are the dogs to the beaches?
We have dog friendly parks - should we stay away from them too? And what about the dog friendly pavements where you qualify for the Golden Shoe Award if you can walk about for a month and not put your foot in a dog's deposit.

I'm sure that some folk will moan on about anything that doesn't fit their narrow minded views. I hear people moaning about kids on beaches, beach football, beach fishing and of course dogs on beaches. They moan about folk smoking on smoking friendly bar/restaurant outside areas, I just hope that when they arrive at the pearly gates that St Peter has a Bensons on and his dog is having a poo.

I take my very well behaved dog to the beach all the time in Spain, mainly just to annoy the pompous, bitter types that have left the anti-dog messages on sites like this. I left Britain to get away from those nasty Daily Mail types, only to find loads of them poisoning the culture in Spain. Still, on the up side, they're mainly retired, so won't be around for long.. Have a nasty day, sheeple.

I am a dog owner and I think they should be allowed on the beach as long as you clean up after. my dog loves the sea and is allowed in England on the beach so he should be allowed in spain I want to live in spain however I want to be able to let my dog in the sea

Sharon Eames said:

I think that if bins are provided for dog poo and dog owners clear any dog mess up and it put in the bins provided, then it would be a good idea for dogs to be allowed on certain parts of the beach, then everyone is happy.

I'm Spanish and I'll say something about this as I've been reading all the comments and I can't hold myself anymore. You talk about dogs mess in Spanish beaches....what about your own beaches? Why you don't go there? May be because they are more a sanitary problem than a beach most part of the times. About dogs, I find more rubbish in beaches from people than dogs, you think people don't wee in the sand? Why is worst my dogs wee than a person's? I personally love go to the beach with my dog and my son, there are regulations bit as long as you take your dog with the lead police will let you stay. I love seeing my son and my dog play and run together, and enjoy something that is not only for humans. Our beaches are incredible and that's why you come here if you have something to say or you don't like it it's easy enough: go to a uk beach. I agree that some people doesn't clean their dogs waste but sorry the waste produce by that is not enough to complain, I prefer the beach free of cigarettes and nappies but of course we are talking about dogs.

When I take my dog to the beach, as for most places, I clean up after him. He loves to run on the beach and have a dip in the sea so why should anyone stop him. Thank you for this great list of dog friendly beaches. For me, it isn't a problem for dogs to be banned from some beaches in the summer as long as there's another beach or part of the beach where they can ejoy running free. There's room for everyone! That's the case in my hometown of Teignmouth and people respect the rules and clean up. They even offer you a poo bag if you've run out! Plenty of dog bins around too. From my experience the Spanish are good at cleaning up after their dogs. Hopefully the Brits will copy their good behaviour too! And yes, humans are the ones that leave the mess on the beach and elsewhere, NOT the dogs! Be responsible.

Fouling is fouling no matter who is doing it, it is wrong. I have a dog and I always pick up and I would not leave litter on a beach either. So it is a HUMAN problem. It's not the fault of the dog so why punish it. Punish the irresponsible owner. Fine them for not picking up ANY litter.

I am a dog lover. Most dogs love nothing better than playing on a beach and they are often loving loyal creatures cleaner than many humans who are arrogant and ignorant to what really matters. Why do you horrible idiots think that only people should enjoy the beauty of a beach. Maybe I should deficate on a beach next time I am on one and take it away in a bag or bury it deep. Its not what you do but how considerate you are to humans and dogs alike, when you are doing it. I never trust a human who dosent think of animals as equally worthy; sure humans have technology but many of them are dangerous and untrustworthy, inconsiderate and often dirty too!

I am moving to Torrox near Nerja very soon from the uk and would like to
link up with a fellow dog lover that goes to a beach regularly with their dog. It does seem a bit of a minefield with so many people not wanting to share a wonderful beach walk with their canine companion and the added difficulty with on the spot fines. Just one beach will do! I am a law abiding non smoking man late fifties and if you would like a dog minder in exchange for the same, without money changing hands, I will be available in the spring. Not sure if its possible to leave personal contact details here, but I am sure there is a way!

I live on Barry Island in South Wales and have read all these comments, as a responsible Dog owner I can only say..In the Summer dogs are not allowed on the main beach, but you should see the state of it after all the Day trippers have left, disgusting, rubbish every where, dirty nappies empty bear bottles, cans etc,etc the beach is big,but it's covered in rubbish? In the winter, dogs are allowed and this is when it's at its cleanest,I defy anyone to find dog poo on this beach at this time of year? We have a beach where dogs are allowed in the summer and although smaller, the only thing left there at the end of a summers day,is left by irresponsible people. So RBJenkins and all the other anti dog beach people out there, Humans are the Problem not Animals?

Brilliant dog friendly beach on the outskirts of Altea. Portosenso - follow the signs off the N332 and park at the bottom of the hill. Walk down and turn right, walk over the back of the marina. Enjoy
