Fernando Torres: The Premier League is The Strongest League
Saturday, August 1, 2009 @ 3:13 PM

England's top division is streets ahead of the rest, according to 'El Nino'...

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has revealed his belief that the Premier League is the strongest club competition in the world. Torres has taken England's top flight by storm since arriving at Anfield in 2007 from his first professional club Atletico Madrid. The Spanish international says there is no comparison between the Premier League and the Primera Division, despite the strong personnel currently plying their trade in his homeland.

"English football has an enormous following across the world, not just because of the players but because of its history, its tradition, the excitement, the capacity crowds," Torres told the club's official website.

"The other leagues can learn a lot, even La Liga. Madrid have signed Kaka and [Cristiano] Ronaldo, and Barcelona have Xavi and [Lionel] Messi but, really, the Premier League is way ahead."

I'm not sure I agree with this. All the top players seem to be moving to La Liga now and the quality of the football in La Liga is much better than the Premier League.

Torres is right. The English League is still the best because it is the only League that has 4 very strong teams. La Liga only has 1 strong team and the other yet to prove it. Premier League has double the global popularity of La Liga people love the English teams. In Africa, Asia, North America and South America they like the players in La Liga but are not passionate about the teams like they are about English teams. Real Madrid may have purchased a lot of attacking players, but football is played on grass not paper.

Small teams in La Liga might play better football than small English teams, but English teams are far tougher to beat. Barca would struggle against a tall and powerful team like Stoke.

The big English teams will still dominate the Champions League, because it is the speed and competitive nature of the Premier League that makes them strong in Europe. Real Madrid maybe brought Ronaldo, but they will not be getting the player that played for Man Utd, who was toughen up by powerful and fast English football, they will be getting Spanish football Ronaldo, who will be lazy and not tested physically every week.

You may be right. I think I've just got a bit of a downer on the Premier League after my team (Newcastle) got relegated!
