On Tuesday night, Real Madrid announced that they had reached an official agreement with Michel Salgado to cancel the player’s contract after ten years at the club. Questions were quickly raised as to whether or not the Galician would be offered a tribute match by his former employers, and according to AS, the 33-year-old will indeed see action one more time at Chamartin. It is believed that the veteran defender will be given an appropriate farewell in the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy match against AC Milan on August 25. However, it is still unclear if he will simply step out onto the turf for an ovation from the fans, or if he will don the famous white shirt one last time and play a few minutes of the game.
Meanwhile, his agent, Gines Carvajal, is in negotiations with the ‘White House’ to discuss a compensation fee for cancelling the remaining one year Salgado had left with the Merengues. A figure of around €4 million will reportedly be paid to the player. Salgado had already stopped training with the rest of the group by yesterday, but he will return to the Valdebebas grounds later today to say his goodbyes. He will then address the media in a press conference with Jorge Valdano at around 13:00 CET.
