Sir Alex Ferguson admitted Michael Owen should have scored four goals last night - as the striker fluffed his chance in front of the England boss. Owen, who has not played for England since March 2008, missed a string of openings on his home debut for Manchester United. It was a frustrating Old Trafford bow for Owen, who was put out of his misery just after the hour as one of a glut of substitutions.
Fergie said: "Michael should have scored four. His movement was marvellous and it would have been nice for him to have scored. He deserved one." Despite Fergie's kind words, sentiment gave way to reality as a once prolific striker showed the extent of his decline. Quite what Fabio Capello made of the succession of missed chances, only the England boss knows, but Owen is unlikely to feature in next week's friendly against Holland.
