Spanish Shilling

Some stories and experiences after a lifetime spent in Spain

The Results Could Have Been Better
Wednesday, November 6, 2024 @ 4:06 PM

Following the floods in Spain (which last week lost me my flight over the Atlantic) and a tornado that landed a few miles away from where I am currently staying in Oklahoma, the election results for the 47th president are in - and it's Trump.

The Doomsday Clock, between one thing and another, has certainly edged a few seconds further towards midnight.

I went to the local polling station yesterday - a bit worried as there were certain to be gangs of motorcyclist heavies wearing MAGA caps and tapping stainless-steel baseball bats off their thighs waiting for anyone who looked a trifle liberal, but the reality was quite different.

It couldn't have been more peaceful.

One queues for a bit, arrives at the desk run by two elderly volunteers, is checked for a voter's registration and then a large sheet of paper is given (and a pen lent) to go mark one's choices.

There were five available alternatives for president and vice-president (I can safely say that, like you, I have never heard of the other three) and then a collection of other choices - local judges, sheriffs and street-cleaner, and then a couple of 'propositions' which one can vote for or against.

The completed paper is then fed into a machine, and away you go, with a sticker on your chest that says 'I Voted'.

Will Trump act on his threats - to deport those who don't fulfil the current idea of Free, Patriotic American Citizen, once he is sworn in on January 20th next year?

Most probably.

I will be back in Europe long before then.

Very interesting, Lenox.
BTW, how come you get to vote in the US of A?
I've just posted this, which might interest you, whether you agree or not:

Woar, don't say that. The Proud Boys will be around to see me.
No, I went with my daughter - she voted while I waited in the doorway.
Just to say - for one reason or another, I have never had the right to vote in national elections anywhere, ever.

You're a true nomad, then, or apolitical (I can't believe that!) There are desert nomads, gypsy nomads (oops! can I say gypsy? Or should it be "traveller"?), digital nomads. Are you an "electoral nomad", perhaps?

I'm a Brit, but haven't lived there since I left boarding school at a tender age.
My parents lived in Spain since 1966 until they passed. I've been in the UK maybe three months since 1969. Horrible place!
My wife - also passed - was American.
I could get Spanish nationality (a lot more useful than British), but no one would believe me - since I'm tall and pink.

Oh I believe you!
This is a reply to your last comment, not your post!
Feel free to either stay wherever you are at present or try for the States. I speak for myself but I'm sure that many true Brits don't really care what you think about us in the UK.
Mind you, I can understand why you didn't have a happy experience in the UK being placed in a boarding school at a tender age. It shows. Maybe, if your parents had placed you into the state school system you may have learned to integrate more and now have a better feeling towards others and not have the 'I'm better than you attitude".
Why, you may ask, am I so annoyed with your comment?
It's because you left as a youngster and only spent 3 months in the UK since 1969 and yet you have formulated the opinion, somehow, that the UK is a 'Horrible place' and you'd prefer to have a Spanish passport. Don't forget to turn the light off when you give up your British passport and rights. Somehow, I think you'll keep the tightest of grips on it as you can!
I expect a rebuttal from someone as eloquent as yourself, but quite frankly, Mr Lenox, I don't give a dam!

The Americans have got it right.

This is getting nasty. Just what Trump wants. For your information, I was American and renounced my citizenship the first time Trump was elected. America is a mess and you only have to look at the lack of people Luc healthcare and the people who live from pay packet to pay packet. I have a UK passport thru marriage and it is certainly not the he best one to have if you live in the EU. I visit one son in Liverpool often and I can tell you it is very very dirty. The councils all over the country are struggling. Is it a horrible place? No but it is a mess. AND America is even more of a mess of inequality. I hope Labour who I voted for can sort it out but from where I am standing this does not bode well. However, early doors. I like you Lenox and I like your writing. I don’t like belligerent comments. We are all different and I never found you stuck up. Over and out

Wow, Lenox! Your original article and subsequent comments have turned out to be controversial, just like my article about Trump that I referred you to: https://www.eyeonspain.com/blogs/a-view-from-the-mountains/23406/kamala-trump-ed-by-the-orange-coloured-fascist.aspx
But, isn't that what journalism/blogging is partly about? Provoking a reaction.
I think so, and I shall continue to read your stuff, which I enjoy. I don't agree with everything you write, but most of it.
Keep up the good work, continue flying the flag and telling it like it is!

Pabloderonda, Yes, but which flag?😵‍💫🥴🤣

Hi, watchmanager. It was just an expression. However, I suggest that his "flag" is probably Spain, where he has lived most of his life. I suspect that you are a pedant, who has nothing better to do than go online and "nitpick". Shame on you.

Hi, Pablo, not at all. I'm just an English man who took umbrage at being told that Britain is a horrible place by someone who admits he's only spent three months there over the last 55 years.
Yes, I was being tongue in cheek pedantic about your comment on the flag you asked him to keep flying. That's your bad! So if it's shame your expecting, it's not going to happen. Shame on him for professing to be British then disrespecting our country on a Spanish forum.

And probably around a fortnight in total over the last forty years - that's about one day every three years...
More than enough.
Mind you, being a writer of sorts, I do subscribe to The Guardian.

the Spanish Government did not seem to do too well when Valencia and other places were flooded.
