Valencia Bans Live Animal Circuses
Tuesday, June 21, 2016
The regional government of Valencia unanimously approved the banning of circuses which use live animals throughout the community.
Valencia has now become the second autonomy in Spain to adopt an initiative of this kind, after Catalonia had already adopted the move. A number of municipalities within the region had already adopted the ban themselves, but this latest regional initiative enforces the ban across all 24.
The initiative urges the PSOE and Compromís led government of the Generalitat yo initiate a dialogue with those responsible for circuses to stipulate terms and deadlines for the completion of the use of wild animals and their convenient relocation. The measure seeks to stop the installation of tents with animals in the cities of Valencia before the “inability to adequately meet their physiological, mental and social necessity” are met.
All political groups with representation (PP, PSOE, Compromís, Ciudadanos and Podemos) voted in favour of the initiative to be included in the amendment of the regional laws enforced through the Department of Agriculture.
