Multi-million-euro airport extension continues despite imminent closure
ByNuria Pérez
STATE airports company AENA is spending nearly seven million euros on an extension and improvements to the passenger terminal at Murcia-San Javier airport - even though the facility is set to close later this year.
A total of 4.1 million euros has been budgeted for the check-in area and the restaurant.
The project includes extending the boarding and services areas, moving the check-in desks to a larger area, and improving the water and sewage networks, the electricity installation, the air-conditioning system and baggage inspection zone, amongst other works.
The scheme has been part-funded with EU cash.
Additionally a new system to inspect bulky luggage in the hold of aircraft has been provided by Siemens for nearly 2.8 million euros.
An AENA spokeswoman told CBNews: "We cannot stop the works because the contracts were awarded in 2010 and they are due to be completed in February."
According to a press release issued by AENA, their aim was to adapt the facilities for increasing commercial flights.
