Easyjet, the British low-cost airline, has bought the Gibraltar based GB Airways. The airline will cease to exist next March bringing to an end the business set up by the Gaggero family in the 1930s.
However the purchase of GB Airways by Easyjet could be good news for Gibraltar in more ways than one. On the airline front Easyjet will take over the services of GB Airways from March and fly to Gibraltar from the UK. British Airways, of which GB was a franchise holder, intends to also still fly to the Rock but offering a largely business and first class service, compared to Easyjet's no frills flights. Monarch will still fly to and from Luton. As the Gibraltar Government has now taken over the responsibility for landing charges a reduction in these can be expected which may attract still more airlines.
