Finding work in Spain is not as easy as people believe and it takes, as I know from practical experience, a number of years to get established and the Spanish businesses actually favour ther own people on employment
Gettibng work done in Spain costs far less than the UK as the costs are lower, some estimate at least 35% less than Uk prices
When any new urbanisation starts there is always the situation that people will try to find as much work as possible, undercut each other, and a lot of bad words are exchanged and this is normally for services such as building, gardens and keyholding
The problem is howvever the black ecomony where too many people choose to work without declaring income or contributing to the Spanish system by not paying tax or National Insurance contributions and by not registering to work legally, and are not aware of the potential effects on their customers
It is expensive to work self employed or Autonimo as it is known, €330 per month NI contributions, quarterly tax returns completed by an accountant and you have to charge IVA, VAT to you and me, on all transactions as there is no threashold
So it is a difficult chicken and egg situation you don´t have enough business to pay the costs but unfortunately the situation for you, the customer if your supplier is not legal can be serious and if you undercut local spanish or legal british tradesman businesses normally what eventually happens is that you get reported for working to the local tax people.
The tax people will always investigate and if they find you working they will fine you heavily and backdate any fees and it is very common for a Spanish company, opertaing legally, especially on a new development, to collect fliers and report people
If you are operating as a keyholder you should register the properties with the local Police station because if there is a break in and the police are called out and you are found to be operating an unregistered service they will disallow any insurance claim
If you paying somebody to collect you from the airport as a service this is ilegal as there is no such thing as hire and reward and if anything happend you are not insured to travel in that vehicle
If you use an individual or company that is not registered to work then you as the buyer will be held equally responsible for any fines if IVA and income has not been declared on the transaction
I am sorry to be so doom and gloom about this but is only when things go wrong, which in my business I see so often, that people get ht by the consiquences and it only needs one person to get upset and tell the authorities for things to escalate
I would always advocate that on a new development all people that provide servives should get together and communicate and that all customers should carefully check out the supplier, getting at least 3 quotations for any work required
Recenly I posted, on this form a request for a legally operating electrician for work on anoher local site, supply and fit of more than 100 lights, a nice contract which was subsquently carried out by a local registered electrician at a contract value of over €4000. I did not get a single response from this thread
