There will be a new service from Norwegian Air between Gatwick and Alicante from spring 2013..
Norwegian Air Shuttle (DY) has announced plans to open new bases at London Gatwick Airport (LGW) and Alicante (ALC) in Spain from next spring.
Focusing on the developments at LGW, DY said it will launch the base with three Boeing 737-800s and increase to four aircraft by the end of 2013.
“By establishing a new base in London, Norwegian will be positioned to meet the future competition on short-haul routes within Europe as well as long-haul routes globally. Growth and volumes are necessary to stay competitive in the airline industry,” DY CEO Bjorn Kjos said.
DY did not give detailed information on its new routes from LGW, stating only that will serve several Mediterranean and Nordic region destinations.
However, in a statement LGW said DY will increase the frequency of existing routes to Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki as well as introducing 14 new direct routes. It listed these as Alicante, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Faro, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Majorca, Malaga, Marseille, Nice, Rome, Split, Tenerife and Tromso,
DY also gave only limited information on the new ALC base, stating only: “The Alicante base will—in addition to already established bases at Malaga and Las Palmas—serve an important part of Norwegian’s Spanish traffic.”
The rapidly growing Oslo-based carrier currently has bases in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Spain. A new base for the company’s subsidiary for long-haul flights is also being established in Bangkok. ATW.
