My first post

Hi everyone
This is my first post.
Can anyone tell me .....
I am leaving UK and going to Spain in April, I will be staying there for a years holiday with my boyfriend and 2 dogs. We will be staying in a friends apartment and hopefully travelling around Spain. Regarding the visa, I have read that I can only stay in Spain for 3 months then would have to leave Spain. Could I travel into Gibraltar and out again would this count?
Thanks
Jane

Then you do not require a visa. If you stay over 3 months, you will need to register on the EU foreigners register. Nipping across to Gibraltar won't count. This is a formality but if you stay over six months you will be deemed a fiscal (ie tax paying) resident. That is 6 months in any one year, not necessarily 6 months at one go.
Don't worry about it, though. By the time it comes round to filling in your tax return you will have left the country.

Ok thanks. Where do we go to register for the EU foreigners register?

Any national police station or town hall that has a foreigners office. You will need to show that you have healthcare to cover you for your time in Spain and sufficient funds to keep you. Also make sure that your passport is valid for your time in Spain. It's not really difficult but the Spanish love their red tape (just like most Mediterranean countries). By the rules you would become a tax resident but, as tax returns are done for the previous year, it's nothing to worry about (unless you get to love it so much that you won't want to go home). Have a good year out and explore the country. Visit as many places as you can. One possible hiccup may be your transport. You can't bring a UK reg car over for more than 3 months. Hiring for that length of time would be expensive but public transport is good and fairly cheap. Enjoy yourself.
