Sorry, none of the sites I've been on say what SIP stands for, they just say it is the Spanish Health Card.  Assuming S - Salud or Sanitaria, it's anyones guess what the IP is for.  For those of you living on the Costa Blanca, the Costa Blanca News website has an excellent 40 page (takes some time to download) guide to living in Spain which includes references to the SIP and telephone numbers of local hospitals and medical centres.  The San Miguel de Salinas site also talks about the SIP card and tells you where to get it.  I thought that, maybe, SIP was peculiar to the Valencia region but other Spanish sites also mention it but, frustratingly, don't say what it stands for.
Salud ImPermeable??
Sanitaria Internacional Proceso?
Anyone got any guesses or knowledge?
As these sites tell you to get a SIP card, I don't think you'd be laughed at at a Health Centre.  I'm only a holiday visitor so I carry my health insurance and EHIC. Touch wood, haven't had to use it yet.  I'll be 60 in 3 years when I move over so I will need my E121 from Newcastle before moving over so I can get my SIP (hopefully by then I'll know what it stands for.)

OK, a little research has revealed that "SIP" (or Sistema de Información Poblacional) is in fact specific to the Valencia region. It's all explained (in Spanish) here: http://www.san.gva.es/cas/ciud/homeciud.html
I'm pretty certain that if you live in this area and have one, it is valid throughout Spain, but if you ask for one at your health centre in Andalucia (or any other "autonomous" region in Spain), you may as well speak to them in Catalan. Each region has it's own health card, and they obviously go by various different names. Bring back Franco, I say! Anybody following this thread should also read Febe's post about free healthcare in Catalunya, which is quite interesting. And Janice, shame on you: Catalunya is a small country somewhere between Spain and France!

Hear hear bring back Franco - speaking of which Rajoy, El Presidente of PP was in San Pedro yesterday - people thronging round him on his way to a big lunch for 800 guests and dignitaries with the PP - they were in the streets thrusting up their right arms - well maybe thats a bit extreme but some fairly partisan supporters

Ey Roberto,
I knew I wos right!
Yeah, albeit it's native to the Valencia region.
Well done for your research, I would have done it but have been slaving away at work this week, boring..........!
Long live the SIP card!
Gracias & Adios!

Hello Im new to the forum

I am coming out to Spain early March to work.  I have a thyroid problem which means I have to take thyroxine for the rest of my life and have a regular yearly blood test and I also take blood pressure tablets.

When I start to work and apply for my NIE and residencia does this allow me to have my prescriptions free like here in the UK?

How do I get to see a doctor as my doctor refuses to give me any medication once I leave the UK to work.

Please help?

When you are in need of toothache medication you need to go to the dentist, at least in most cases. That’s because the toothache medication that is most effective is a narcotic including oxycodone, hydrocodone, and/or codeine. These are analgesics that are frequently used with over the counter drugs, too, to increase effectiveness. These drugs cannot be purchased without a prescription so in order to get one you will need to visit the dentist. Many times you will also receive a prescription for an antibiotic, too. You may have a serious toothache and dread going to the dentist, but it is unfortunately your best option. Going to the dentist will allow you to determine what is wrong and how to fix it.
