Crime happens everywhere, but Spain is considerable safer than many countries.
Many victims of crime made it easy for the thieves, leaving items on the passenger seat while driving (and even leaving the window open and or the door unlocked) or leavimg bag/wallet/purse etc. on the shopping or luggage trolley or on the next seat or floor in restaurant etc., using a pocket which is so easy for a pick-pocket, trousers’ back pocket the easiest, but the pocket on the trouser leg at thigh level is a good second. Allowing themselves to be easily distracted, even for just a few seconds. Opening a wallet in say the market so thieves can see you have money and which pocket you put the wallet in. Not being careful at ATM’s. The list is long.
For many thieves it is 'their job', they are professionals.
Always be vigilant and take care not to be a 'volunteer victim' by making it easy for a thief, The more vulnerable you look the more vulnerable you will be.
It is not by chance that some people have never been the victim of a pickpocket or opportunist thief whilst others have been, often more than once.
