Any Info on living in the Canals area

We are in the process of selling our house here in the uk and relocating to Spain, which is a life-long ambition. We like the area north of Malaga and are very familiar with the area, but very expensive to buy there. We are registered with a few estate agents and have seen a lovely house very close to Canals in the Valencia region, but have never been there and know nothing about this area . What is the climate like, and the general cost of living in this region. Many thanks Yvonne

Wow Nigel, thank you so much for the links to all that information. The site with all the local businesses is going to be so very useful when we arrive, and need things sorting.  We live in Hampshire in the uk so will be even more savings on living costs for us as its quite expensive living here.
