Road tax and insurance in spain
The Comments |
Hi all
Next September were going to try the winter in spain up to April, we will be renting.
What do we do about road tax and insurance, for that length of time please.
Any advice

You have to make sure your road tax, MOT and insurance are valid for the entire stay.
You can check with your insurance company if they will cover you for that amount of time (most will only give 90 days and reduce the cover to 3rd party unless you pay extra but some companies like Saga will do it for longer).
The car must be legal in its own country so you need everything to be valid for that time. You can do road tax on line but the car, if UK registered, must have a UK MOT. You cannot have it MOTd (ITV in Spain).here.

You can only 'road tax' a vehicle in the country where it is registered
The same applies to MOT. So if you are scheduled to be away when a current MOT expires you will need to have it re-tested again before you leave UK so that you will have a cert. which will remain valid for that period
Also be aware you will need to leave Spain before you have been there PERMANENTLY for 3 months, or you will have to register on the EU Citizens Register. (It may be enough just to visit France, Andorra, Portugal, or Gibraltar for a day. Keep some proof that you done so, maybe a visa receipt for petrol). I have not been able to find any official information what would constitute not being there `permanently.’

Knowing that they're leaving in April surely constitutes not being permanent? It would be utterly pointless them registering, just a load of hassle for absolutely nothing, and I can't think of any good reason to leave for a day before the three months expires. Who in Spanish Officialdom will be in the least bit interested? They will be tourists, plain and simple.
P.S. Don't forget your EHIC.
