will be in the area soon and the wife and i want to try the Garrucha fish restuarants but am slightly put off by how to order. We have heard horror stories of people thinking they ordering a portion and getting served with a whole fish for a couple of hundred euros. Could somebody explain how to order correctly. Have heard the El Almejero is good but ny would really welcome some reccomendations.
Many Thanks

Hi Dean
It is true you can get ripped off but there are ways to avoid it. It is what can happen if you order something which is priced by the kilo. If you do this, you need to ask them to show you the fish and tell you how much it weighs. This is quite normal and they won't think it strange. The size of the fish depends on what they have available.
If you want to play it safer, stick with those fish which are priced by the portion in the conventional way.
We have yet to meet anyone who thinks that El Almejero lives up to its reputation. Our experience and everyone else's that we have spoken to who has been there is that it is expensive and not that good.
You will not be ripped off at Escanez (on the Paseo just above the port) which is probably the best conventional restaurant. They are happy to serve you a 'racion' to share as a starter and for a smart place with linen tablecloths etc the prices are reasonable and the service is excellent.
For a more atmospheric meal, the chiringuito on the beach road just as you leave Garrucha to go to Mojacar is really hard to beat. It doesn't seem to have a name but it has cream and green 'umbrellas' for a roof. It is the other end of the spectrum from Escanez in that it is pretty basic in terms of tables etc but it is almost like eating on a boat as you are right out on the rocks. The only 'starter' is a wonderful tomato salad with garlic/olive oil and parsley, with bread, and then there is a selection of fish - not always the same, depends on the catch I assume. All grilled, nothing fried. The prices may seem quite high but the portions are generally large and they are happy for you to order a salad and a fish to share, which is what all the Spanish that fill the place regularly usually do. You can't book so you need to get there reasonably early - before 2pm for lunch or before 8 for dinner. We LOVE it - unfortunately it only opens from the beginning of June to the beginning of September and at Easter.
Bear in mind that fish is now pretty expensive everywhere and you can expect to pay €10 even for a plate of sardines nowadays.
Feel free to pm me if you want more info - don't want to bore everyone to death with all the local restaurants!

Hi Simon
Probably too late for this and hope you had a good meal but it is either La Capilla (Garrucha side of the turning) or La Loma Blanca (Los Gall side). For anyone else who might be thinking about either, they are both quite expensive and although I have never eaten in La Capilla I am told that the setting is fab but the food is no better than average. Have eaten at LLB - excellent for meaty things esp the Lamb and the Pig but almost certainly not the place for fish. In reality the only really good places for fish are the restaurants like Escanez (on the Paseo in Garrucha) and all the chiringuitos.

A new Indian restaurant has opened in Los Gallardos, on the Los Gallardos to Garrucha road in what was known as Loma Blanca. We have been a few times now and have thoroughly enjoyed their food. The chef has some different options created by himself, to us it is good homecooked Indian food. It is at least worth a visit, even just for a drink and see the view across the Cabrera mountains from the terraces.

Hi Geminis
Yes indeed Geminis, we found the food super at the Mountains of the Moon (new name of La Loma Blanca) . Delicious and original and well priced. However we recommend avoiding the Tuesday Buffet. Very standard sort of food, not that much choice, not enough customers yet to have a good turnover of the dishes during the course of the evening and worst of all, not hot enough (although we understand that he has made efforts in that direction since several customers complained.) However it really is not any more expensive to have a selection of well chosen dishes from the menu and have the benefit of them being freshly cooked.
We are going tonight and really looking forward to it.
Incidentally, between LLB and now I imagine you know that it had a short existence as a brothel! The new proprietor told us it was left in a horrendous state...

Yes Jane B, they are trying very hard to offer a choice of experiences with the buffet, Sunday Mini Indian buffet and carvery lunch as well as the evening menu, which is excellent.
Yes, we had heard that it used to be run as a brothel.... they have quite a bit of work still to do to bring everying back around, it just takes time (and money of course). Wonder if some past customer have turned up and been asked if they want to see the "menu"....

Went to the restaurant last week as my friend likes fish (I don't particularly). It was one of the few fish restaurants open in the evening. I'm afraid I took one look at the menu and walked out as it was too pricey for my liking, especially for something i'm not over fond of. Looked (and smelled) good though.

Hi Everyone,
Been visiting mojacar area for several years now. Like to eat out now and again.
Menu del Dia - El mar la Mar @ Villericos pricey at around 20 euros but you get wine etc. but worth a visit.
Menu Del Dia - Mojacar strip Felipes San Bernabé ( just past Indalo apartments next to Subway ) great chicken banquet for 2 with wine for little money.
Indian - Mountains of the moon ( former loma blanca ). also in Vera next to Rolys 2 -Golden Amritsar.
Nice setting - La Capilla ( food Ok nothing special ) - Miramar at Bedar sit outside overlooking the mountians.
Mojacar strip - Try Torre Bahia ( good basic food reasonably priced )
Mojacar strip -Try Fantasia - Best set evening menu around for 11 euro. well worth going.
Vera - Obviously the Terrazza Comona - We ate there in July ver y nice.
Chinese - Palacio Imperial, Mojacar strip on same row as the Argentinian ( you will see Deidre Barlow in there it;s her favourite!) we are not fans of the Wok buffets although they represent good value not sure about the quality
Tapas - Anywhere in Garrucha - sometimes it is better to try the bars aong the second street from the sea front - you do pay a premium for sitting overlooking the harbour and sea. go to the bar order a beer and point to what you fancy - remember there are different size portions.
Hope this helps, Have a nice trip.

We live near Bédar and I endorse everything Kenny says. Bit dismayed to learn the price of the MDD at El Mar la Mar has gone up to €20 - maybe that is at the weekend? During the week it used to be €12.50 and fabulous value.
If you go to the Miramar in Bédar the baked shoulder of lamb (for 2), the Paella and the big mixed fish platter are great, and for starters the Sopa de Marisco and the Coktail de Gambas are also good but TBH you might be disappointed with the rest of the menu - but worth a visit for the view.
The Fuente above Bédar village is now under new management and worth a visit - the views are even better than from the Miramar. I understand they are doing Lithuanian specialities for Sunday lunch and the reports are very positive - going to try it again soon.
