Bilbao or Santander
The Comments |
Hi all, we're making the big move this May and will be driving over, but dont know whether to drive from Bilbao or Santander. The ferry costs are similar so any advice would be appreciated. By the way, we're taking over our newborn with us who will be about 4 months old by then so we're a little worried about the journey. thanks

Hi, we have a place in Formentera (just down the road from Rojales) and came over via Bilbao 2 weeks ago for an extended stay. The ship (Pride of Bilbao) was OK, but the weather was bad and the boat late to dock, so even though we were informed there was a problem and we arrived late at Portsmouth (21.30) we had to wait around until 0.300 the next morning to board. The crossing was very rough and although we are good sailors the crashing of the waves on the ship kept my wife awake. The journey seemed to take forever and we docked 7 hours late meaning that most of our drive (now a dash) across Spain was in the dark. I think we had a bad experience, but won´t do it again as living in Canterbury, we could have driven through France quicker.
Maybe with an infant on board its still the best alternative as at least the ship offers more space and facilities are quite good, which probably beats an extra 12 hour drive across France with a young´un in the back!

Hi Mike and thanks for the reply, just a few more questions...
How long was the drive from Bilbao to Benijofar?
How much was the fuel bill (what size engine do you have and is it petrol or diesel?
thanks very much.

Trip took about 10 hours virtually continuous drive, except for fuel stop. Fuel is Diesel at about 45mpg in a 2 ltr. Cost just over 1€ per litre plus about 20€ in tolls.
