Pet Insurance
The Comments |
Hi
I have searched the forum but cannot find any threads that deal with pet insurance in Spain. We are planning to take our 2 pups across to Spain with us in May when we move over there (providing their pet passports are all sorted) and I am in the process of getting quotes for insurance for them. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which company to use? Has anyone had an insurance in the nuk that has then transferred over to Spain on a permanent basis and kept the same insurance, or do we need a Spanish insurance policy?
Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks More, what are we going to do with out your prompt responses? I have been having a day of searching for this, that and the other on forums and on google, some with more success than others but I am gradually getting things crossed off my 'To do' list. Fortunately, the pups are quite happy laying in the warmth of the sunshine coming through the window and are leaving me time to get on with this, they have no interest in going out at all. I think they are going to be quite happy in the Sapnish sunshine.

I think you will find vet fees in Spain considerably less than those in the UK, and you may want to think about whether insurance is really worthwhile. I have read somewhere that it's not all it's cracked up to be. Read the small print very carefully for any exclusions before taking on any policy. (Obvious, I know)

Hi Jan, I took my 2 cavaliers over to Spain last year, they are insured with 2 different companies as I just kept them with the one they were with when I purchased them. My eldest dog is with Pet Protect, but they would only cover insurance for 30 days abroad. My younger dog is with Petplan and they insure for up to 90 days abroad. Last year they were really good and let me insure my other dog with them for the 2 months I was away. Fortunately I did not have to call on them for any disaster.
However I have spoken to them this year and they will only insure the older one for 30 days like Pet Protect this year, so I probably won't bother.

Hi
I've had a quote from Protectapet that has european cover, so they will be covered for our travelling, and they cover the whole life of the dog, rather than the policy I had for the last dog which would only cover him until he was 8, at a fixed annual premium, no increases as the dogs get older and no increases even if there have been claims, so at least we would know exactly what we would be paying for them every year. They are sending me full T&C to read, but it does sound to suit my needs so far on what I have been told.
Because my last Cavi got ill when he was 5 and needed a lot of treatment, x-rays, ecg and medication, and died when he was 6 years (and in the last couple of months I was at the vets every week with him) I do feel I want insurance on the pups. It may be after I have been in Spain for a couple of years and get familiar with vets charges etc, I may change my mind.
