Buying a Car in Spain

I've just read a blog that says that car sales have fallen through the floor, yet a very good friend advised us to buy a car in the UK and ship it to Spain as there are no bargains to be had.
We'd far rather put out money into the Spanish economy because that's where we want to make our home, but we're confused. Anyone got any comment on this????
