Car registration plates

 Can anyone tell me about Spanish reg plates?

I know here in the UK, certain areas have letter to denote the area they are bought?

So say for argumrts sake, we bought a car with CFC in it's plate, what area is that from?

So what was CFC then?

Can't see it on that site, it's just we have had hire dars with CFC and hubby is, of course, a fan!

He wants to try and buy a car with a CFC plate, sad I know, but there you go!

Spanish plates since 2000 have not had an area idenitity, so CFC is just a computer generated sufix, I see loads of cars in my area with ????GBV which I quite fancy.

The ones to be concerned about are those with the letters PGC... these are all Guardia Civil...or other police agency vehicles.

The coding PGC is not used however on their unmarked vehicles since its a bit of a giveaway!

 Ahhhh, I see now, I thought all of Europe had the same way of generating number plates in regard to area.

That's why the UK changed the method, to fit in with the EU.

So Spain changed to something else in 2000.............odd......!!

I will watch out for the PGC ones foxbat, don't want to buy a car and find a criminal hiding in the boot!

The Wikipedia site explains it clearly - the letters merely give a rough indication of when the car was first registered (in Spain). My 2004 car has the letters CJG. Latest registrations seem to be up to the H's.

I didn't realise the current UK system included letters denoting where the car was registered. I never quite understood the point of this, other than to amuse small boys on road trips and keep them quiet by getting them to spot plates from Southend-on Sea or wherever. (worked a treat on me)

Never quite understood the point of personalized plates, either (except to make money for DVLA). In most cases, it would be much cheaper for the owner to change their name to, for example, BD51SMR. (I chose that one as an example as it's the one shown on Wikipedia, in case you wondered!)

Can't work out why the Junta have not jumped on this given the ever increasing need to raise money.

For example.

Just imagine the plates ........CDS 1 to ? created especially for a celebrity auction in Marbella,it would make a fortune!!,

Just imagine if they set up a website to sell future configurations from H onwards like say, just came into my head 1111MAD

Only ever seen one personalized UK plate that made me laugh - on a top of the range Jag at Malaga airport: P155 PAW.

We are looking for an older car 2002/2004 small and economical.

I have heard that if you go inland they are cheaper?

Maybe there is a 2nd hand car lot someone knows about?
